Somebody slap me with an algae scraper to bring me back to reality! (Seriously, I'm setting up a 12 gallon Edge. There is just no way I can emulate this guy's masterpiece in it...)

You can't really compare that system to what you can do in a 12 gal Edge aquarium. Even so, you can still make the smaller tank a real gem. The trick is to realize that a smaller system does have limitations, but if your careful, you can work around them and create something anyone would love to have.
The key is careful selection of your fish and plants, and proper maintenance of the system. You choose plants that tend to stay small. In a small tank dwarf hair grass can be a medium size plant. Something like jave fern is big enough to be a center piece plant.
You need to choose fish carefully also. You typically want smaller brightly colored fish so that everyone shows up. For example the smaller tank would be ideal for a school of neons.
I find that I prefer to use only a few species of fish. for me it tends to look much better than 2 of this and 3 of that, and so on.
Of course there is another alternative. You can upgrade and get a much larger tank or several of them. (grin)

Thank you for the encouragement! I sure hope to choose my plants and fish wisely enough to make a beautiful, tranquil display. My problem is, I want a little bit of everything just to see what it looks like in person, and how healthy I can keep it in my system. I know that will be far from peaceful to behold though. Every time I narrow my selections down to something sensible like an adult, I get completely derailed when I see something fantastic like this setup of Tom Barr's.
