Here is a post I made regarding this. I'll copy and paste it into here as well.

I tried plugging into Aqadvisor my desired fish list, and it's saying that my tank will be overstocked at 123%. Can I get some advice from some fellow aquarists to let me know if this stocking list is fine or if I should tone it back a little?

Tank: UNS 75p (36 gallon)
Filter: Fluval 407 Canister Filter
Stocking List:
  • (10) Celestial Pearl Danios [Already have these in the tank]
  • (7) Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox)
  • (5) Otocinclus [Already have these in the tank]
  • (10) Amano Shrimp
  • (6) Julii Corydora
My understanding is that with the amount of filtration I have going, it should be fine, but I also don't want to overcrowd the tank and make the fish feel squished in there. It's a heavily planted tank as well.

yeah, that should be fine. I have a 407 on a 33 gallon and had a dozen 4 inch fish and some smaller ones and a million snails. You should be okay with this. just make sure you clean that filter.

Awesome! I'd love to get a school of boesman's rainbowfish, but everywhere I've seen has been telling me that a school of 6 minimum needs like a 50 gallon :(
Dwarf neon rainbows will have to do for now!

You can get less than 6. I have only 3 boesemani in my 70 gallons and they do fine.
Oooo that's tempting, however I think the tank size is still the limiting factor here. I wouldn't want to reduce their quality of life by putting only a couple in my smaller tank when they'd rather have more room with more friends to swim around with

Yeah, my 33 is a 33 Long. I bought this one to make a gourami tank. Some where larger than 4 inches but they were okay because of the foot print, 4 feet long. And those Bosemani should be okay with like 3 or 4. Especially if they are the largest fish in there, nothing to make them feel like they need a school. They'll probably end up shoaling around anyway. I don't know the dimensions on your tank, but most rainbows like to swim so foot print is usually something you want to pay attention to.

So I was also thinking, pretty sure I have a 207 on my 33, so you definitely have good flow. This flow might make it okay to put in some larger rainbows. But I'm no expert, just a thought that I would look into if I were you and really wanted some Bosemani Rainbows.

PS, nice tank
