They can live out of water for hours, or like buu said less depending... I have found mine behind and under my stands and dressers. Just keep the top of your aquarium blocked off because they are escape artists. In nature the can move from one body of water to another, think swamps that are a series of multiple pools some drying up and others forming. I eventually had to stop keeping them because they uproot plants and basically reek havoc on my tanks. I have a really big one I caught in a creek in a fish only rank with small and very fast fish that he can't eat. Good luck
