Help Identifying Betta Type

1109 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Pattern8
After once ordering, and receiving, a beautiful SuperRed Half Moon male from a specific breeder on aqua bid I decided to order another. After waiting for more than a month (was told shipping errors) I today received what I believe is a common veil tail type.

I'd be a little disappointed to have spent over $50 and waited a month for something I could have purchased at the LFS

Hoping you guys could help out. Let me know if I need better photos.

I think he may be a halfmoon, but his tail looks injured to me. Here is Finn, my red rosetail halfmoon for comparison

Looks like a hm with tail damage. Probably chewed it up in transit

Thank you! Went to bed pretty irritated at the thought that I got bait and switched. Glad I was wrong! I did a Paraguard dip on him when he arrived and now Seachem Stress Guard in the hope that his fins will heal and grow back out.
He's got good form and shape in the body, definitely better than an LFS purchace but his genetics are a lil messy and he certainly wouldn't be a breeder. I can't tell if he's a halfmoon or not, but he could be an DHM(double half moon). He has double tail genetics showing through. I can't tell if he has two tails by the pics or not, but the anal and dorsal fin, plus body thickness, all stand out to me as distinctly double tail. It is possible for him to show those genetics and not have the two tails, quite common.

One thing to know is that bettas that have two halfmoon tails tend to have a poor time flaring so the actual effect of the half moon is lost on them, this is why the genetic combo is favored in Plakats because of their short fins.

Hope his fins heal up quickly for you (warm clean water is most important, keep up on water changes).
I've not been happy with my online betta purchases (from various thai breeders). 2 have diamond eye (scales grow over eyes-loss of eye sight)-1 also has cysts. 1 cataracts and cysts. And the last has a cyst. All the bettas I've bought local don't have cysts or eye problems...
I cant help identify the fish. But I think its worth pointing out that in some of the images you have there it seems like the new arrival could have ich. Difficult to say for sure, but I see white spots in the the first, third and fourth photo posted.

At first I thought those were just dust spots on the glass but looking closer at the pictures at least some seem to be on the fish, not glass. I hope I'm wrong.

I believe the white spots are just dust outside the tank, they're never in the same spot on the fish body/fins from shot to shot. Having several curved glass bowl tanks myself I can attest to them being dust magnets!

If you can get a flare that would be helpful.:D he's gorgeous! What size tank is it, it looks beautiful.

Thank you all for posting. The spots were indeed on the glass and not the fish. I've had one experience with Ich in the past (years ago and not in any of my current tanks). It was not pleasant.
He's in a 1 1/2 gallon bowl. I have it set up with an undergravel filter attached to a bleed valve. This way I'm able to provide some filtration while minimizing any current. There is also a mini heater that I've somewhat disguised with the hard scape. Still means a lot of water changes but I love the look of it so much I find it worth it.

He is healing up nicely but still no where near as beautiful as his predecessor. However, we're stuck with each other lol.
