Years ago, I bought what I thought were Marimo Moss Balls. This is what I have now and am wondering if it is worth keeping... Maybe as a biological filter I hide in my canister filter??
One in tank pic, and one just pulled from the water.

Just a guess on my part but I think it is the same algae that is used to create Moss balls. Moss balls only retain their round shape by water movement causing them to roll about the aquarium or by effort on your part to rotate them and gently pat them back into shape.

Was that white string in the last pic something you added or was it part of the original Moss ball.

Dee, thanks! Since it has no roots, I had to assume it was more of an algae than a moss, just like a "moss ball". But since it grew fairly fast, I also assume it is not a true Marimo.

Yes, the white string was just leftover from where I had anchored some of it.
Do you think if I trimmed them out to be round, they'd be moss balls again? If so, I'm gonna have quite a few! ;-)
