Help, I paid for snails... o_0 (Pictures are being added)

Well its true I paid $14 something for 7 snails.

They're nerites and they where actually in my LFS! I saw a few in their display a few months back but no extras and didn't really have any place for them at the time. Then went back today and bought 7 of the 14 or so there. Some of them are in rough shape, but they aren't the normal nerites I've seen in the USA.

I'll find some pictures online of the exact ones I got, But some of them have those horns:smile: .

Edit: Here are what some of them look like

Now to figure out how to get them some calcium! Maybe try and breed them?

Not all do...

Fish newb, anyway you could get the store's ph# for me? I keep several sw nerites, I would LOVE to have some fw ones besides the olives.
You can add CA simply by purchasing liquid calcium sold for sw tanks. I use a 2 part called ESV B-Ionic for my sw tanks, so I always have it on hand. Kent & Seachem also make it.

You want me to just go get the rest? When the weather warms up I could just send you them? (for what they where $2 and shipping)

They're in pretty rough shape as it is.

Updated orriginal post with pictures of what some of them look like...

Watergaller1, I'll go back next week see if the manager is there so I can talk to him. (About a few things including the snails lol)

Oh you are great!! Please let me know..I would pay you extra for going through the trouble.
Looks likc milalic had some a while ago...

They mostly seem to be "clithorn" and not nerite, but I believe there is one nerite in the bunch.

Cool either way.

You can either add liquid calcium to the water, or you can drop in a calcium tablet (the kind you buy at the drug store), but get the ones without Vitamin D. There's lots of info at www.applesnail.net about keeping all types of snails. I actually feed my snails Tums. Yes, tums. They go nuts for them. Calcium carbonate and a little tropical fruit flavor. What's not to love?

And those horned nerites are gorgeous. Im jealous.

Thanks for the ideas. Never thought of feeding tums:eek5: !

Do you know if the water is hardened by tums being eaten? For example the PH going up?

I'm sure that all but one of the snails are actually "clithorn" which are similar to nerites I believe but some stay a bit smaller and I haven't been able to find any information on breeding them yet... Maybe someone at applesnail.net can give me some advice.

Thanks,
-Andrew
those are clithon brevispina.

i have about 20 of them. they stay small and lack of nerites' habbit going out of the tank. they spawn eggs too but a lot fewer from nerites.

great rock / glass algae cleaner. they even eat tough GSA.

Yup they are! One of mine did go above the water line, must have been lost. I plopped him back into the tank after a few hours of him sitting above the watter doing nothing:icon_roll

What do you know about breeding them? Any success?

They clean amazingly well!

Wild snails! Sweet find none the less, I wish they had stuff like that here in stl....:(
They are a cool find, very interesting snails who eat a heck of a lot of algae!

I'll be going back to the LFS tomorrow to get the rest.

PS. Look into getting FireFox or IEspell and using the Shift key to make your posts a whole lot better looking, after a while it just becomes second nature and improves your typing a lot!:icon_wink

Hope they have some left...
No one buys snails:icon_wink the stupid kid there thought I meant the apple snails when I said it, and didn't even know the price.

No wonder the manager said he would make room if he had to for me:icon_lol: None of the kids in there had any idea what half the fish are let alone the plants...

One of the guys was vaccuming their planted 75g show tank:icon_lol: He was almost vacuuming:help: wrong

Hi Andrew, what do you mean by rough shape?

Thanks for the ideas. Never thought of feeding tums !
Neat idea:D

They're got eroded shells and stuff. Bad water at the LFS:icon_mad: lots of Ick/ich so one of the shell's eroded part is blue from meds:icon_lol: Just not great condition but hopefully the new growth is great. Feeding them helps.

the seller said that they're wild caught around the estuary, so i guess brackish water is needed.

i've never dedicated a tank for these snails, but hey it's a good idea since i have a small tank lying down unused :)

I was guessing a brackish stage might be needed.

You should try them in their own tank, I would but don't really have the room...

Let us know how it turns out.

Well, I'll be going back to get the rest tomorrow:icon_roll

They're breeding!!! Yes I think they may be breeding or one is or something. There are like 5 very small snails that look like mini versions of the clithon They're clear with a line or two one looks like the beginning of a pattern the other one it's "horns" .

Might try to get a picture of them tonight there are only a couple so they might not be out once I try.

So either a mystery small snail has popped up in my tank, or I've got them breeding somehow and it looks like they're live bearers

Time shall tell...
