Help! Aqua One AR850 upgrade.

G'day guys.

I am going to upgrade my Aqua One AR850 165 liter aquarium to be able to keep plants a whole lot better, but I don't know what to buy!

I know I will be wanting to replace the crappy filter with some sort of canister filter, but what one should I choose? (I am pretty much set on a Fluval or Ehiem)

Also the heater NEEDS to be replaced. The thermostat is way out and I am waiting to come home from school to see some nicely cooked fish fingers :icon_eek::icon_eek: What heater would you recommend? I have heard that pretty much any heater with a built in thermostat has a crappy thermostat, so has anyone got any suggestions on one with a separate thermostat?

And finally.... The lighting. I would like to keep the standard hood, but it sucks that my aquarium is just shy of 3 foot (33" to be exact) so I guess i would need a 24" fixture unless 30" ones exist. Open to suggestions on what lights I should be running. (BTW at the moment im running 70w t8)

The only heaters I will touch anymore are the Via Aqua titanium. They have a separate controller. Or the Hydor inline. If you are getting a canister filter get the hydor it stays out of the tank.

As for the filter Eheim is always a good choice. I have had too many of the smaller fluvals leak to reccomend them. I have three Rena xp3s right now. One of them has been running for five years with little to no maintenance.

As for media I never run carbon or chemical.

The Rena xp3 is 103 a piece off bigals, Comes with enough media to get it running, but you will want to add around 2 L of matrix or biorings which will run you about 15 more bucks.

If you go with eheim a 2217 or two would do fine or a 2262.

Keep in mind I am obsessed with filtration.

I was looking at an ehiem 2217, looks like I will have to go with that, looks very nicely built.

As for the Via Aqua, I couldn't find an Australian store and it would cost too much to ship from the US. I reckon I will go with an Aquamanta 200w, looks similar to the Via Aqua anyway.

Has anyone got any lighting they can recommend? preferably T5HO
