Heaters; submerged or in-line?

Been searching for a definitiveanswer.. but it seems debateable?

I like the idea of the in-line to avoid tank clutter, if the correct wattage/gallon is reached, are there any obvious downsides to them?

the only debate AGAINST an in-line heater is the trouble and expense of installing one.
other than that, go for it - since they are far better than any other type of heater,
especially if you have a large tank.

thanks! do it once, do it right.. that's how I like to do things.. so the 60 bucks for an inline seems like it's the way to go...
Personally, I chose to stay away from the inline heaters...call it paranoia, but I've heard a couple of instances where the unit leaked. I was a big fan of Jager heaters until they got bought out by Ehiem...since then they went downhill IME. Right now I use a Visitherm Stealth and it works great on my 65g. The black body of the heater blends perfectly fine with my black background.
I use the Stealth heaters as well and I am very pleased with them. I mount them horizontally near the bottom of the tank, and you can't see them at all, and don't have to worry about them during water changes because they stay below the water line. I even was able to hide a 25 watt heater in my 5.5 this way.
I 2nd what Spypet said.
i prefer heater inside canister filter or sump
I love my Hydor inline heater... got it for about $35 when it was on sale from the Drs.Foster&Smith.

If you have a canister filter to connect it to, I'd say go for it...
I also prefer having the heater inside the sump or canister, like the Eheim Pro II 2126 or 2128. Otherwise, I love the Hydor inline heaters.

The only other disadvantage to the inline heaters is that it will reduce the flow of the filter, which is why I prefer heaters inside the canister or sump.
thanks for all the responses guys. I ended up going with just a 300w submersable... all the more reason to hide it with plants!
