heater borked?!

731 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  evil nick
I have a VERY planted tank waiting to be moved into place. The heater inside crapped out. I have no fish in the tank ATM and its averaging about 70 degrees +/-

I am going to buy a new heater but also leaving for the weekend and dont want to order it since it will prob arrive while Im gone and sit on my stoop for days in the cold and/or rain.

Do you guys think the plants will be okay for a week or so in chilly water? It was a lot of work to get it fully grown so Im a bit worried.

thanks

I think you'll be fine
Lots of small factors we don't know will make some difference. Things like size of tank as small change temp much more. what temperature in the room and how low it goes?
But with all those variables, it is still my thought that you will be fine. Most plants are used to some temperature swings in nature. Fish will often move with their preferred temp but plants don't have that option.
I no longer heat any of my tanks. None of my plants, even the very tropical ones, seem to mind.

Heaters are not that much, why not just go to your local fish store and buy a new one?

I can't say for the OP, but for me, the answer is pretty simple. I get robbed at the lFS! I like to buy good quality heaters and I am very particular about the features on my heaters so those I find locally are not what I want. My store credit is about the only reason I shop local. If it becomes a question of letting the credit expire or buying something, I do buy equipment locally.
Thats a new thing for me to see planted tanks having heaters.
So what is the minimum temperature we are taking about without heater in the room?

people mainly add heater for the fishes comfort. plants can benefit also because they grow better at warm temps.

plants can handle cold water/temp fine. they go into a winter hibernation mode. you can keep them in the fridge. thats what they do with tissue cup plants.
thanks guys. I wasnt sure if the shock of temp changes was going to affect them.

The reason I dont buy at my LFS is because Amazon has the heater I want for about half. I ordered it because Im going to use the heater when my fish are swapped anyway but was worried it would arrive when I was gone for the weekend and then sit there but someone said they will grab the packages when they are delivered.
