Hardscape material in CT?

Hi All,

I'm new to CT, recently moved here from the UK. I'm looking to start a very small 5 gallon planted aquarium, but have no idea where is best for good hardscape materials. From these forums it looks like World Wide in New Haven might be closest for fish as I'm in Norwalk. I see Aquatic Wildlife in South Windsor might be good for plants although expensive, but I don't want to drive all the way there just to see if they have hardscape, so some ideas where is worth going from you guys would be really appreciated please. I guess being in Norwalk that New York is also possible for me. I have been to a few local stores here in this area but everywhere seems to be focused on saltwater.

Greenwich Aquaria would be your best bet from where you are, for plants and hardscape materials. Try House of Fins too.
I have been to both and they are much better than any other place in CT.

I did go take a look at Greenwich Aquaria a couple of weeks ago. They seemed to be mainly focused on saltwater although did have a few nice planted displays. Their plants for sale were quite poor looking, I think I caught them at the wrong time. They admitted that they had just cleared it out and would be getting another delivery, but the fact that what they had was not well looked after put me off a bit, for example Anubias with the rhizome buried underneath the substrate. I didn't see any hardscape layout material on display at all, so maybe I missed that?

House of Fins I have not seen, so thanks, will definitely go take a look there and call in at Greenwich Aquaria again at the same time to see if they have more this time.

Any tips from others in CT on where to get good hardscape would still be appreciated. I don't mind driving a few hours if I know its worth it when I get there.

You might try Blake's Aqua Den or Waterbury Aquarium but both are hit or miss.

Blake's didn't have much when I was their yesterday. I think they had a couple pieces of driftwood and that was it. Not much for plants either, just a bunch of fish.

Aquatic Wildlife in Manchester hasn't re-stocked their hardscape material since they moved. Maybe in a few weeks it will be better. I would hold off taking the ride up.

Wet Pets in Vernon has some hard scape. They typically will get me anything I ask for a pretty reasonable price. I normally ask Steve or Donny(owner), they are pretty honest on what they can or can't along with pricing.

I know this is old, but does anyone know if any stores in CT have any seiryu stone? It looks like i'm going to have to order it.

world wide fish and pets has a lot of nice spider wood / some malaysian driftwood. They also have seiryu stone, dragon stone, lava rock, some others

Really? I was just there a couple days ago. I only saw a couple giant pieces of wood, but i didnt really look that well or ask.

I bought the rock there a few month ago they may not have any left

Just found some dragon stone from Slither & Swim. They had a couple pieces left at $3.99/lbs. I noticed they also had some potted plants from Ultum Bature Systems which i think is also BucePlant. Not a big variety of plants but halfway decent.

Not sure if either of these are up your alley. Stone is $5 a pound I believe.

Worldwide Fish is in Amity New Haven. Wet Pets is in Vernon.

anyone know if theres a place that sells ADA substrate like colorado sand?

Only place I know of is online. Sadly, no ADA stores in CT at this time that I know of. Plenty of pet stores and home depots sell different types of sand, don't know if anything is similar to Colorado Sand.

A few weeks ago I found a couple small pieces at Slither & Swim, but I bought most of it, they only had 1 or 2 decent sized pieces that were only okay looking. Not sure if they have restocked it since then though. You could always call and see or check their Facebook page.
