I contacted the city water today and found some info out. At my address my hardness is 19.1 parts per gallon. I went online and found out that to find parts per million I have to multiply by 17.1. My water is roughly 326ppm. Should I invest in a Ro unit for a planted tank or just try using the city water? Thanks.

Hardness in planted tank.

I think this is high for planted tank. It depend what you want to acheive.

But, to my knowledge, I see more around 80 to 180ppm-mg/l range

some fish and plants probably can be ok in 300ppm gh water. This is to investigate.
But lot of fish and plants thrive in lower GH.

You can buy osmosed water relatvely cheap.

I can buy osmosed water cheap. However, do the math, and after a short time I could of paid for my own unit! I'm looking at a $99 6 stage unit off ebay. Anyone have experience with something like that?

I've never seen water quality reported as parts per gallon. Always parts per million.
