Well congrats. I love my spec.

While I'm setting up another nano, my prized shrimps always go in my spec.

They're only really appropriate for inverts or the smallest of fish.

One dwarf puffer

Some least kilifish

Mosquito rasboras

Or shrimp colonies lol.

Substrate arrived yesterday while I was out of town, so I put that in, then I fished out my pregnant ghost shrimp from the 29G and put her in there. She seems content, but I need to get some plants.

I found her in the filter compartment a few hours later, so I'm thinking I need to stop that up somehow... gonna put some polyfill behind it for now.

Wait lol where did you find her? Mine LOVE the filter compartment up top, but I would put some net behind the low hole.

They get good food up top.

She was in the compartment at the top -- maybe climbed through the little vent holes? I'll take your advice on putting something behind the lower hole too.
Definitely do not plug up the top one. It's how the water is filtered, and the shrimp + babies love it up there. They don't get stuck.

Thanks! The top is pretty crowded right now as I have an old filter pad from my Betta's tank in there to help with making sure the water parameters stay stable. I'll make sure now to plug that up =)

My shrimp was at the bottom of the foam-block compartment today, so per some advice from MABJ and others, I also took some time to cover the lower filter entrance with filter floss. I lowered the flow rate in the tank to a very very slow pace by removing the tube from the pump, and I stuck another piece of foam batting inside the pump compartment for good measure.

I took a large section of the Java Moss from my 29G tank and put it in the spec too.

I'm wondering if I should put some aquarium salt in there? I was reading that maybe 1/2tsp would be good for momma and babies?

Solid work with the floss. How did you rescue?
I'm unfortunately pretty sure I lost a lot of babies that way /:

Anyways, what shrimp? Ghost shrimp? What other inhabitants? It depends on those two things.

Just one ghost shrimp that came already pregnant from Petsmart. If it doesn't work out, I'll probably switch to Amano shrimp or RCS maybe.

I rescued her by cutting a long thin piece of filter padding material and sliding it down and coaxing her onto it, then pulling it up to the very top and gently moving it over to the big side.

There's a small pond snail I saw in there, but nothing else.

She died today :icon_cry:

I checked the water parameters and they look fine. Not sure what happened :(

Such a rough day with first my Gourami and now the shrimp and her babies dying. :(
Have you cycled everything properly? I'm sorry for your loss! You'll soon find you don't want ghost shrimp anyways.

I added filter media + water from my Betta tank when I set this up. Been testing the water daily just to make sure, and I haven't seen any ammonia or nitrites the entire time, so I guess yes?

As for not having ghost shrimp - I agree. I wanted something with color anyway, but like I said, this one sort of fell in my lap :p

I understand :) hehe.

I just set up a new aquarium the same way, so I can't say you did it any worse than me. I suppose it's possible for the shrimp that you didn't have enough bio film.

The tank is empty again right now. I rescaped my 10G and put all my Java Moss from both my 29G and my 10G inside the Fluval Spec. I moved the driftwood that was in here (and really, too big for this tank) over and migrated the bacopa colorata and anubias' as well.

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with it yet. I'll post some pictures up in a little bit.
