Hairgrass carpet?

1984 Views 26 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  k3xx
So I planted a bunch of hairgrass into my new 10 gal, and I was wondering how long it would take for it to form a carpet? its been up for about a month and it seems like theres no growth at all, in fact, it looks like its dying. I have DIY co2 and it produces a pretty steady output, but i dont know what the light is. Anyone have any tips to growing it?

Knowing what the light is, is the key to figuring out everything else, like co2 and fertizers.
It needs medium to high light to grow very nice. I got high light in there before and have to trim it every week. Pain in the @$$ you know. but now I change it to medium and cut off the CO2 trim it once every month. LOL

IME DHG is a slow grower regardless. Also depends on how much you started with and how big an area you want to cover.
Dry starts are quicker - if thats not an option, try growing some out emersed and then heavily plant your tank with it (still going to be a couple months...)

this is how i planted it it so far, and its not really that big of an area to carpet... im pretty sure i need brighter light, im just not sure what petsmart/co sells...
Looking at one of your other threads, it looks like you have a single standard T-8 fixture, probably aqueon, with an aqueon full spectrum bulb, from the pinkish hue. I don't think a single T-8 will grow Dwarf Hairgrass. Spend some time studying this first post, and it will help you understand what your options are.

I been growing some out with organic potting soil and sun light. It look like it's working so far.

Thank you so very much! i will read now :)
Is there any new green growth?
very, very little
DHG is a fairly slow grower, so yea switching up the lighting might work
yeah, im going to have to...
It does take time to adjust and emersed leaves will die back until the submerged leaves appear. I put a little in a tank the other week and it all turned brown and died. Now I see green leaves poking up.
That being said what is the substrate?
I have high light no fertz no co2 just excel and i see a few new runners every day. It took about 2 weeks for them to start shooting up while plant gets establisehd but after that it speeds up
Give it some time. Dwarf hairgrass needs to be established before it becomes a rampant weed. You already have the CO2 so if you can upgrade your lights as others have already said, and give it some ferts, it should start growing.

According to this chart:

the Aqueon dual T5NO fixture sold at Petsmart:

Would give you around 35 par. That is the bottom edge of medium light. That may be enough light to grow the hairgrass with co2 and proper ferts. You could change out the "Colormax" bulb that comes with it, and put another 67k bulb in, that would raise the par some, the colormax bulbs don't put out a lot of par. Or, you could use your T8 fixture with it, and have higher par also.

it doesnt come in a small enough size for my tank... would a floramax light work? the charts are kinda confusing, im still in summer mode :p

If you are talking about using a different bulb in your T8 fixture, it won't really make much difference. I know that the smallest fixture in the petsmart link i posted is 24", but you could still lay it in top of the aquarium. Its going to be hard to find anything 20" long.
yeah i am.. i just dont have the money for anything big right now, not to mention my mother is completely over me being into fish, so i dunno what i can do atm
