1085 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Supa Mint
I'm having some bad issues with this algae. I'm fairly certain this is just hair algae but just wanna make sure it definitely is? Any advice would also be appreciated. Attached some files to help.

There are many kind of hair algae. I think it's hard to use "one cure for all" method for these algae. By the way, I think your plants may not doing well. Healthy plants normally won't have algae

Honestly, manual removal is the most effective for hair algae, and then focus on finding the cause. Once you get it under control, manually cleanup as much as possible followed by filter cleaning and water change, and then go pick up a few Amano shrimp to finish it off.

I try not to resort to chemicals whenever possible as I find I learn a lot more tracking things down :)

I'll be honest I let everything get out of control so now really paying the price! I'm dosing CO2 and TNC Carbon and now doing regular water changes every week. The tanks only small so don't know if it's worth removing the plants and replanting some new ones?

What is your dosing scheme besides co2 and tnc carbon?

Just Tropica Premium plant fertiliser with each water change.

Honestly, that fertiliser lack of macronutrient such as no3 and po4 if I'm not mistaken. Your plants may suck dry all macro fairly quickly with high lights and co2, especially if you densely plant your tank. just like my 1st tank. Maybe you can post picture of your tank in ferts section and ask for opinion of how to dose your tank.
Healthy plant normally won't attract algae, sick plants always got algae on old dying leaves or stunted new growth. (base on my experience)

Thank you!
I had relatively good luck treating my hair algae with hydrogen peroxide, applied directly to the algae via a syringe. It turned red, and was then probably consumed by my SAE or Oto or Amano Shrimp - but not before the peroxide treatment. Just be careful with the amount that you use, as overexposure can kill fish. Ask me how I know. :(

Good luck!
