Anyone have any idea what this is? They're small raised bumps on a leaf I yanked out of one of my tanks. They're on both sides of the leaf, they sort of remind me of new growth on my vivarium moss.

They appear to be coming directly from the leaf itself, as the leaf doesn't have any spores for daughter plants.

They look like java fern sporophytes.

Couldn't find much info on them. Any idea what might be causing it? Low light? Nutrient deficiency? I can see the growths on a couple more leaves in all 3 of my tanks.

Definitely spores, I bought a package of java fern sporting spores. Never had problems, or random java ferns like I wanted...

the java fern IS the sporophyte. those could be the resulting gametophytes (the generational stage we rarely notice in ferns, but the main one for mosses).
i get leaves like that, only really old ones. nothing otherwise different about them, and they still generate plantlets - so i just leave em.
