Green water question

I am in the middle of cycling my tank and about a week ago the water started to turn green. Is this "normal" during the cycling process? I have read that it usually will clear up on its own and I am curious if thats true or is there something I can do to fix it.

can you tell us more about your tank? have you used any osmocote root tabs? WOO PIG SOOIE!! (sorry had to add that...dont know if youre a hog fan or not)
Yep, GO HOGS!!! And no, no root tabs yet.
do you have any way to test your water parameters? You might look into uv light...it will help alot plus it will help with any future breakouts and help kill any free floating harmful bacteria
I havent checked the parameters since it was cycling. I need to do that. I am looking at getting a canister filter soon and I want to get UV as well.
I have an aquatop canister with a uv in it... But you can go to Aquatraders.com and their oddeysea canister filter kicks some but..... Moves a lot more water than my aquatop... But the oddeysea canister doesn't have a uv... At least in the smaller one... I think it's the cf500
Someone was telling me that the cfs500 has leaking issues but I have also read that if you replace the O-rings that come with it then it works fine. The cfs700 comes with a 9w UV sterilizer.
I would not add a UV to a cycling tank. While the established nitrifying bacteria are mostly attached, in the beginning, while the tank is cycling, there is a larger population drifting in the water trying to find a place to grow. UV would kill these.

Get the test kit. Maintaining the proper level of ammonia is the fastest way to cycle a new tank. If you do not know the ammonia or nitrite levels they might be too high or too low, and you would not be growing the bacteria at the optimum rate, and not know when the cycle is complete.
Is it a powder like algae on the glass that easily rubs off? If yes, increase the plants so they eat more nutrients and leave it be. I've read on several websites that if you leave it alone it disappears as it has a one month cycle. I followed that direction with my new tank and it did disappear. I also added some fast growing plants which helped too. :) Have fun! It's amazing what you learn as you keep playing with tanks. I tell my mom it's my biological ongoing experiment.

Thats the funny thing, there is nothing on the glass whatsoever. It just seems to be suspended in the water
Since your tank is cycling it's probably from the high ammonia levels. I would ride it out until the tank is fully cycled then worry about the green water. Large water changes will fix it quickly but only after the cycle is finished.

Thats what I was thinking too. I knew I couldnt do any water changes until the cycle finished and hopefully by doing some it might start to alleviate the water issue.
Go with the flow no need to worry about...GW will go away in few weeks.
I cured green water by purchasing an internal UV sterilizer, it only cost me 50bucks at a LFS and its working like a charm. The product is called the green killing machine made by an european company called AA.

I battled GW for months and this was the only permanent solution i found
