Grassroots 20g long

Hello all, this is my second journal. Back a couple of months ago I decided to buy a pressured CO2 regulator and saw that GLA offered a multi block system.

JBJ Filter
Amazonia with power sand S
Powder nutrients over sand.
A bit of controsoil where planted.

I settled with a cheap 20 gallon long, which I do not mind due to the fact that a cover is easy.

I went on an Internet search and found some awesome pieces of driftwood from [Ebay Link Removed] Then I hopped on buceplant.com and order up a ton of buce as well as found alot of nice anubias on [Ebay Link Removed]

In addition I added a bit of Hydrocotyle Tripartita "japan" and Eleocharis sp. "Mini".

Day 1

Day 3

Day 5

So 8 days in I am doing the 2nd water change and I noticed 3 snails. All pretty small but one about the size of a pea. I just purchased for a community tank 2 assassin snails in case of a situation like this. But should I wait until the tank is fully cycled before throwing in the assassin?

I wasn't planning on putting anything in until the full cycle is done. These were the last test results I had yesterday.

I am to the point of debating on what type of fish I would like to have call this a home and that is where maybe a few of you could chime in.

1: species only killifish tank. 1 male 1 female (maybe 2 female)

2: apistogrammas | pygmy Cory | some other nano school. CPD's

3: Species only pigmy sunfish like 8 or more if possible. Elassoma

4: 2 Rams. I did not use sand and most is amazonia and controsoil so I do not know if that would work.

I am open to ideas, I like the idea of possibly having fry live and grow in the tank with the parents if provided enough cover. But I understand that would be easier with a bigger tank. I have a community 20 gallon with alot of nano fish. My favorite are the 2 scarlet badis.

Excited to see this tank grow slowly over time.

beautiful tank! id say killifish only tank, I say that because I've never seen that before :)
Thank you betta! I am leaning most towards the killifish. Seem like the most beautiful and interesting to me. Once I upgrade to a bigger tank in a few years I can re home them.

Killifish purchased. One male two females. I am hoping the tank is cycled enough for them when they arrive. Otherwise I am going to have to keep them in a holding tank for a bit until then.

Any suggestions in speeding up this last bit of cycle?

Well not so much as to speeding the tank up, but I would suggest daily dose of Seachem Prime to protect your fish while the tank is finishing its cycle. Partial water changes as well to keep nitrites down.

What kind of kilifish?
Econde thanks for the quick reply. I have done 2 50% water changes in the first week of this tank being up. Each time dosing 2ml of prime. I will switch to 2 times a week at 25% water changes dosing 1ml of prime each time?

Arch it is a trio of Gardneri Gold. From the pictures the males looked beautiful. Found then on aquabid. Close to NE as well.

So I got home today and all 3 of my levels have dropped a bit. To get some BB in the tank I took a month old filter cover from my community tank and put it on this one. Should get some stuff flowing in the filter I would imagine.

I have a ton of the pest snails in my tank that is currently cycling. I put a couple assassin snails in there for the time being, they don't seem too bothered by the tank not being completely cycled yet. I do have a small snail graveyard in the corner of my tank now though. I just purchased them last Friday so who knows, it might be too early to tell.

Econde I threw in one of the Assassin snails that i could find and he has been going to town.

Here is where I am at, the Killifish are due in a few hours and the tank is still not fully cycled of course. What i do have is a fully cycled 20 gallon that has been turned into a 10 gallon with alot of floating plants and some bacopa caroliniana and some java moss. I was planning to use it to breed some CPD in the near future. Would i be better of to put the new killifish in here for the time being while this 20g long is finishing its cycle? My ammonia is .25 and nitrite and nitrates are still high. If i were to put them in the 20 gallon long then i would do a 25% WC and add 2ml of Prime.

Thoughts?

Dan
Yeah that is what I was thinking as well, it seemed like the most logical thing to do but I just wanted to get some other feedback! Thanks Arch! 👌

Yeah a bunch of amazon frogbit and a little bit of red root.

I like the look of the roots hanging down. Pretty nice IMO.

I figured it would be good for the fry to feed on for the CPD. I have not fallen in love with the hexagon style tank though I must say.

Yea I prefer traditional, long and cube style tanks. But hey as long as you can use it right?

I had a big hex tank for angels for years and really liked it at the time, but I don't think I'd have one for most fish. Angels really looked good in the "column" orientation with plenty of room to go up and down and hex is really the only way to get that profile to work in a big tank as far as I have seen.

I picked it up off of craigslist for $20. Is in great condition but quickly moved it into being a second use for this hobby.

I agree with you there arch, my lady loves angle fish and though I never have kept them but I would most def put them in a hexagon if I did. (Just not a 20g) haha
