So I know if you put in a fish with a Betta that is similar to it, like a guppy with its long tail, the betta will attack. Does a Dwarf Gourami qualify as too similar?

My Betta and honey gourami did not get along. I had to take the Betta out.

Well, if you consider same family similar then, yes. :) Both fish are Anabantids. Gouramis and Bettas should not be kept together as it can cause some real problems due to the territorial nature of both fish towards their own kind.
