Got a 55 gallon tank in a raffle suggest a substrate

Ok so I won a 55 gallon tank setup and I want to do an amazon setup most likely. I'm trying to pick a substrate but have no clue what I should use. Ive never done layered substrates but would it be best if I did or what.

I prefer sand, but it really depends on your tank setup. What kind of fish and plants are you planning on going with?
