good schooling fish?

Looking for something NOT super pricey, big enough to possibly avoid being acara/angle/discuss food yet small enough I could get a large (possibly 10'ish) school size with some decent colors.

I was looking at neons because theyre cheap and look great bu they tend to be eaten by bigger fish and are SO sensitive to infections.
I love rainbows but they are to big for what I want and really pricey.
Other tetras are meh in color
I was thinking MAYBE cherry barbs?

Anyone else have any thoughts?

This will be in a 55 HEAVILY planted

other fish will be
my blue acara - full grown - 50/50 on whether I WILL keep him though
Full grown angel, possibly might get another couple smaller ones for the tank as well of various types.
I would "like" to try a couple discuss. I might even just get one more angel then like 3 discuss and hope for the best.
I have one juvenile black ghost knife - I will move him to someone else when he gets to big as I wont be upgrading past a 55 gallon but right now she (I believe) is an awesome, beautiful and very interactive fish.

All these are being moved from my 30 to the 55 very soon but I wanted to get a school in there first to be honest

Cory cats look really cool in big school but they stay on the bottom. I have four tiger barbs that are super active and would look pretty cool with ten or more I'd imagine. Marble hatchets are interesting to look at not so much on color though. I have some rosey barns too that have a nice color! Good luck!

Cherry barbs are cool and should do OK. Also check out: Emperor tetras, Bloodfin tetras, Columbian tetras, Serpae tetras (there's a long finned variety that's pretty too), Rasbora Het, or Rummynose Rasboras for a few other choices that may work for your tank

What about Rasboras? I have a small school of Espei and I love the bright orange colors. And they are very active and playful. As long as you don't get really young small ones, they should be big enough for an Angel to leave alone.

Those would be a good fit. They love heavy planted tanks and spawn on plant leaves so that's cool and they do good in schools of 8-10

I'd get at least a dozen.

Try looking up diamond tetras. I think they are very underrated, also they are beautiful. With good food become even more beautiful.

We have harlequin rasbora and they are very pretty when they school!

I have angels and neon tetras and they get along fine.
Rummynose Tetras are the tightest schooling fish you'll find. And they get about 1.5" long and aren't super easy to be picked on by larger cichlids.

Otherwise, there are plenty of options out there. Lots of larger danios and rasboras (Clown Rasbora for example) would be nice. Harlequins might be big enough if you buy them as adults, but I wouldn't risk it if you think your fish will eat something small that you put in there. Green Rasboras are even smaller.

Diamond Tetras, Red and Blue Colombian Tetras, Congo Tetras, Bleeding Hearts, etc. all are larger tetras that have unique colors.

Rummy nose tetras = King of Schooling fish.

Rasboras tend to shoal, not school (I have a group of 12 in a spacious ADA 90H).

Cheers,
G
They are used to shoaling in schools of hundreds, 12 might feel like a school, but it really is not.
I like harlequin rasboras. I like that they're not so colourful that they take away from the rest of the tank they're active and very playful. I have 10they school most of the time.. I would have more if I had the space
This tank will be overcrowded with all the other ciclids you want to add.
