Good free office program?

812 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  ColinAnderson
Are there any good Microsoft Office-like programs that are a free download? I'll be damned if I'm paying $60 to type papers and run slide shows.

Any help is appreciated.

I use open office also. It works fine for writing papers.
I tried OpenOffice, problem is it appears I have to copy to CD, or use a P2P software component such as BitTorrent. I know very little about computers, so what should I do or am I way off base here?
Openoffice is very good but you have to make sure if you emal the document to someone it's in the correct format.:)
mrbelvedere, are you by any chance a student at a university? At many major universities you can get a copy of MS Office for free from your Instructional Technologies Center.

yep. academic versions are MUCH MUCH cheaper then retail. But you could find links to older versions of word and such on torrent searches.
Actually, I'll be there in one week. It's not a major university, a small one in fact. I was not aware universities did this though, I'll have to check on that.
If you pay 'student computing fees', you might as well get your money's worth!

We also get free symantec anti-viral software here, too!
Shoot I will send you a copy of MS Office Pro 2003 with Frontpage and Visio for free. It will even add the need security codes for you at install and is eligible for online updates. Would you consider a trade for some hardy stem plants for my 150?
You don't really need any special software to download OpenOffice other than a web browser. Just click on the big green button in the middle of the home page, it will take you to the next page. Choose the top option in the middle of a page: an even larger green button. Choose your OS, and it will take you to the last page. Click on the large green button there and it will prompt you to save the file. Just download that and run it.
