They don't need a heater. Common misconception. They like it without one. We actually have members who keep neocardinia (same genus as fire red) in barrels that go through the winter, and they survive.
Needless to say, unless you live in an ice box, don't worry about it.
If they hover from 65-70° they'll be good.

I have some Cherries in a barrel on a balcony. Temp last night in the water was about 40 and they're still alive and well.
I usually take a couple thousand to the LFS each spring after winter breeding.

Most people end up with hundreds in a 10gal tank after a season.

Can you explain your breeding setup because dollar signs just flashed in front of my eyes :hihi:. I wouldn't mind trying this in a rubbermaid container in my basement!

They're Neos. There's nothing special. You put them in a healthy tank environment and they breed. I have no idea what the water parameters of the barrel are beyond temperature.
You aren't going to get rich off of them unless you put in several hours per week culling, selectively breeding and making sure colors are perfect.
