Glass/ghost shrimp question

Ive started my very first 2 gallon shrimp tank and about 2 weeks ago added 10 ghost shrimp bought from Petsmart. They were completely clear when I bought them but now most have a beautilful blue color to the front of their body and orange dots and stripes on the bottom half. Is this normal?

Never seen blue in mine, but red/orange bands on their arms and antaenna(sp) are common.
They were probably stressed out in the conditions they normally ship them and keep them in. I just got some and they seemed to get more color once I moved them into my tanks at home.
Yea when I had mine some would look blue. They're pretty shrimp. Just don't keep them with any other shrimp except Amanos because they'll eat smaller shrimp.
Good to know. They sure seem like aggressive little boogers when I feed them. Lol
I keep mine with cherries and there are no problems whatsoever, so your mileage may vary. Ghost shrimp aren't biofilm eaters in the way that cherry shrimp are though, so my habit of keeping them well fed might be part of that. It's kind of funny that when a ghost shrimp dies the cherries swarm the corpse, and when a cherry shrimp dies the ghost shrimp swarm the corpse, but neither seems to have much interest in their own kind.

The blue likely came from something you fed them though; I've been trying to breed them for color for a while now with some success, but I've not seen anything other than black/brown, red, and creamy white. A mutation is always possible, but it's not particularly likely.

I had no problems either until one day there was a problem. Just wait, you'll see.
Could you get some pictures? Some ghost shrimp are actually young predatory prawns, macrobrachyum rosenbergii. They get long, blue claws, but look a lot like ghost shrimp when babies.
I'll post pictures when I get home. The larger ones with the most color are carrying eggs. I feed them nls pellets, tetra flakes, and algae wafers.
I had one that turned green when I started feeding it a homemade gel food, so I would have to agree with jasonpatterson. Try cutting out one of the foods at a time and see if the blue goes away. Not saying you necessarily want it to go away, but that would at least tell you if it's the food causing it.
I wish I still had all my ghost shrimp :x

They've been together for a couple of years now. I realize that that doesn't mean much, and it's entirely possible that they've been up to all sorts of shenanigans when I'm not watching, but the babies crawl all over the ghost shrimp and the ghost shrimp crawl all over the cherries and everyone's happy.
I have two rather large Ghost shrimp in my tank with cherries and Bee shrimps. I even have cherry shrimplets that have been in the tank since they were 4 weeks old and some of the shrimplets are very small. I have yet to see the Ghost shrimp show any interest in my adult shrimps or shrimplets. The shrimplets are to fast for the slow weak claws of the Ghost's.

Mine also have blue markings on them and indeed this is a result of the food you are feeding them. I had Hikari mini pelets with color enhancers in it when I had fish and even my Amano's legs turned blue for awhile.
Well I liked having them in my 2 gallon so much, that I went and bought 12 for my planted tank. I had been so worried about my yoyo loaches eating them, that I didnt event think about my angel fish! He ate 2 just seconds after I dumped them in the tank! One got stuck in his throat and he ended up spiting it out about 10 minutes later. Lesson learned. lol:iamwithst
