If you are serious about wanting to raise the fry, I'd set up a separate spawning tank for them, and pull the female out after they're done spawning to let just the male tend to the eggs till they hatch.
You probably didn't do anything wrong, just either the other fish or the female at the eggs.
I had some GBRs that spawned every 2 weeks in my 90gal like clockwork for months on end. Never had any babies make it, the eggs would always get eaten.
