I am thinking about getting some geophagus red head tapajos, but I am torn between a dark vs a light colored substrate. I know that a member with a massive discus/geophagus tank uses white sand and his fish are amazing. I want something that will make the color pop, as well as being fine enough not to damage their gills.

Personal preference really. You can search google images and see them against various colored substrate and backgrounds. Or you can ask for opinions on the MonsterFishKeepers forum since there are a lot more Geo keepers there.
