Gap in tank top

Hi All,

I know a lot of people don't even have tops on their tanks but for my solution with this 48" Marineland LED Lamp on my 55 Gal tank, that's High Tech, what are your thoughts about this little service gap I left on the top of my tank? It's just made so many things easy to always have this gap and be able to reach in or drop food or whatever in a pinch? The rest of the top is LEXAN which is not warping at all and letting the light in just fine, if not better than glass.

I guess I am wondering, with that big of an opening why bother with the top.

Due to the proximity of the water and the LED lamps, I'm concerned that they're too close to the water and with the entire lamp exposed to water, that I would not do, unless I were to raise the lamp, but I don't think (I don't have a PAR meter) that this LED solution would be bright enough for some of the plants that I am growing now and intend to plant this coming week? The service gap (that I dubbed it) allows me many advantages, as you know having to open and close, slide tops open is tiresome sometimes and is nice to just have that opening. I'm really just curious what other people think it's a very bad idea or really something that I shouldn't even second guess. I don't anticipate any fish jumping out. I don't keep those types of fish.

Will that opening allow CO2 to escape at a more rapid pace from the water in my tank? I'm still learning about planted aquariums, so I appreciate any feedback.
