Yep- a hot plate, a toaster oven, or even a hot gun work great! I've been soldering SMD components using only those items for a few years now and see no reason to spend $$$ for more "proper" soldering equipment.http://www.instructables.com/id/Build-LED-Under-Counter-Lighting-that-ROCKS/?ALLSTEPS
I thought the re-flow solder idea was interesting..........
The guy did go a little "overboard" on his under cabinet lighting project though. I did the same thing in my kitchen using 12V Automotive "led accent lighting strips". They were simple to install, since the leds came mounted to a self adhesive strip. I just stuck'em where I wanted them and connected their wires in parallel to a 12V/3amp wallwart plugged in to a switched outlet. It couldn't have been easier.
