The other day I saw a great looking piece of slate in a tank at the LFS.

The guy sold it to me for the regular slate price.

Which got me thinking - would that classify as live rock?

And then I started wondering...

Could I - to set up a new tank - buy gallons and gallons of water from a tank at the LFS and just totally skip the cycling process?

If you want beneficial bacteria to kick start a cycle get some filter media that's been in an up and running tank (make sure it has stayed wet and not without its food (ammonia) for more than a day or two). Porous rock won't have enough to make a difference. Using all per-existing, non rinsed (again kept wet and fresh from cycled tank) substrate will also help but usually not as much in there as filter media (sponge, ceramic media, 'bio balls').
