So I was out the door with the family and wife noticed 2 aquariums sitting next to the dumpster! 36 bow just like the one I have and a little 10 gallon. The fluval 305 was still full of water and had snails in it when I opened it. However I couldn't get it to work properly...
It kept making a loose metal rattle sound.

I'm wondering if I can use the 305 as an add on filter for my cascade 700 and load the 305 with bio media.

Any thoughts?

yes you could but I will guess it just needs a new impeller

The most frequent cause of canisters to stop is the impeller as it is the only moving part. When they stop working, poeple do throw them out, so you may be the lucky winner! Check and clean the impeller and well and see how that goes. The shaft or impeller may need to be replaced.

Yes I'm gonna try and clean out the filter tomorrow and try to get it to work. It turns on but doesn't suck any water. I've also noticed the the primer wasn't doing anything also.
