Fluval Spec V journey

Hi,

I am new to this forum and I have really enjoyed it so far :smile2:

I got a Fluval Spec V (5g/19 liters) version 2 from my girlfriend in a gift, so I now have a nice desktop aquarium. I plan on turning it into at planted tank.

I started the aquarium last friday so it has now been up and running for 9 days. The substrate is Tropica aquarium soil. The decoration is:
- two seiryu rocks and I plan to smash up another one to get some smaller pieces in there as well.
- A piece of redmoor driftwood

I plan on doing a DIY co2 setup. I have ordered a kit from China which has arrived, but I still need some pieces before I can set it up.

For now I have only added some Rotala rotundifolia in the back, but I would like to do a carpet effect too. I thought about either Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' or Eleocharis acicularis 'Mini'. However I worry that I will not get a good carpet-effect because I use the stock Fluval Spec light. What do you think?

Bump:

You're off to a great start... I really like the look!

I can only speak for the Monte Carlo, but I'd say give it a try. I have some in a low tech, no CO2, low-medium light tank (just a DIY LED light I built) and it grows like crazy. It doesn't grow as fast as in my high-tech tanks, but looks every bit as nice.

That looks pretty good Aqua99! I think I will give it a try. My fingers are itching to get some more plants in :p

There are also 10 orange shrimps that will move in next week.

My Fluval V with stock light and Monte Carlo in December 07 2016 and now April 2 2017. Using Dirt and Fluval plant and shrimp cap. Had to lower lighting period from 7 to about 4 now and a window screen to block some light as you can see some BBA on the rock. Tank is near 2 window so that may also be causing my problem. No Co2 or excel

I'm having issues with BBA on my hardscape, too. I'm kind of starting to think the updated stock light is a lot stronger than I was lead to believe.
