Yes, it works. I have raised my odessa barbs in a Fluval Chi (they spawned in the 55g, but I collected the eggs and fry and put them in the Chi).

I would still recommend replacing the stock filter with an HOB. I have a Aqueon Quietflow 10 with a sponge on the intake, it's perfect for the Chi.

I know it's not the same as fish fry, but I had two African Dwarf Frogs in a CHI with the stock filter. Without question, the filter was strong enough to suck up the tadpoles. If they got close enough it was over and eventually they all got close enough. Just my experience, I'm not sure how strong the fry you're breeding are, but it is possible. Since then, I replaced the filter and light and the tank is much nicer, I'm expecting guppy fry in a few days, but I have sponges covering everything so I'm hoping that's sufficient protection.
