i am being cheap. i can't find a canister filter for less than $100 so i am looking at hob filters.

the fluval c3 looks good to me. the emperor 280 does too...

it is going on a 30 gallon tank that will be pretty heavily planted and not overstocked. (i don't have the fish yet, not decided, but i won't have it overstocked, that i know)

what do you think?

You should easily be able to find a good canister filter for a 30 for under $100. I found my Marineland C360 on Amazon for $130 and it's rated up to 100 gallons.

after talking to a bunch of people and doing some research i have decided to go with the hydromaxx pro sponge filter. i got the one rated to 60 gallons for my 30 gallon tank. the tank will be pretty heavily planted and lightly stocked. i think it will be good.

i got 2 of them (one for each tank) with shipping for $35. if they don't work out well at least i didn't invest a ton of money into them.
