I was given a used Fluval 306 from a friend awhile back, but am still using a HOB (Aqueon Quietflow 20) in my 20G long planted tank. Along with a Aquaclear Powerhead 20. Both of these rate at about 125GPH or a combined 250GPH.

After a little research I have learned that a canister filter is a better setup for a planted environment, but is the 306 too big for my tank? Looks like this is rated at 303GPH. If I took my powerhead down would it be ok?

You would be okay with it. Can always adjust the flow rate with the aquastop valve if it's a little too much. I'm running a fluval 404 on my 20L atm since my AC30 keep rattling and I dont have the fund atm to buy a new impeller and bearing lol.

Thanks for the advice, I went ahead and set it up last night and was able to adjust the flow down enough. Doesn't look like I need my powerhead anymore :).
