How many of you have used it for substrate?
I have been using it in my 200L tank for about 6 or so months
At first i liked it a lot, but down the track i grew to not like it...
It doesnt seem to actually have the nutrients etc that aqua soil is supposed to, and it compresses quite a bit.

if i could be bothered, i would swap it out for some aqua soil

just my two cents.

your opinions?

I have Fluorite Black Sand mixed with EcoComplete and am very happy with it. I only have one bag of the EC and mostly sand. One thing I recommend is washing the sand out the best you can before adding it to the tank or you will have a good dust cloud for a few days.
yeah, my dust cloud wasnt too bad... just added the water in carefully.
It definitely doesn't have the nutrient content of ADA AS.

But it also costs less than 1/2, for me, anyways.

I really like the Flourite black and black sand, I use them in all of my tanks, sometimes in combo with other substrates like MTS.
i bought my 7kg bags for about $34 AUD i think whereas i could have bought 9kg bags of aquasoil for $40 AUD do you use aqua soil in any tanks lauraleellbp?

Not currently. I set up one tank with it a few years back and it was a bad batch kept disintegrating. $100 went outside into my garden. :icon_frow I've stuck with Flourite and DIY substrates (like mineralized topsoil) ever since- much cheaper for at least as good if not better total nutrient quality. Shipping on ADA makes it super expensive where I live.
Sorry to revisit and hijack the thread (sort of), but does anybody know how this differs from regular-sized Flourite in a practical sense? I assume it's the same clay, just broken up into smaller pieces (and black), but the pictures at F&S show it to be closer to black while the "black" (normal-sized pieces) Flourite is more of a gray. Is it darker? Is it easier/harder to physically plant something in? Any other differences that anybody has noticed?
In my experience the sand holds roots much better than regular grain. My Blyxa Japonica took root faster in the sand than in the regular sized too. They both shot out roots, but in the sand they were much longer. My corys uprooted the blyxa in the regular sized, but not in the sand.

The sand still looks gray, slightly darker than the regular sized, if any difference at all.
I can't tell any difference at all in color. I have them mixed together in my 46gal and 90gal. Only difference I can tell is shape and size.
