Fishykid1's soon to come 75G

This is my future tank, not everything is set in stone yet. I've had my 20G high for about 9 months now, as I was first starting out my "plant" hobby. Now I'm realizing that it's just too small to have many large plants, or very many without it looking slightly cluttered.

This tank will be set up around the end of December. Please let me know what you think about everything as of now.

The stuff:
Tank: 75G Aqueon (48X18X20)

Stand and canopy: *building*

Filtration: Catalina 320GPH X2 Canisters.

Lighting: Custom Catalina 4X54W fixture--- 47" X 12" with 3" bulb spacing.

Moonlight: DIY: following my thread under DIY moonlights

CO2: 5lb tank, AZOO regulator; injected into a inline reactor *ACQUIRED*

Heater:300W Hydor Inline

Substrate: MTS layer, PFS cap

Flora:
So far...may change

Blyxa Japonica
cryptocoryne balansae -if it fits in
Glossostigma elatinoides

Hygrophyla polysperma "ceylon"
Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis'
Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig'
Java Fern
Limnophila Aromatica
Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Cuba'
Rotala rotundifolia
Sagitaria subulata - REMOVING
DHG- ADDING
Hemianthus callitrichoides- ADDING
Pogostemon Erectus- ADDING

Fauna: (tank will be way over filtered, 640GPH)
Aphyocharax anisitsi (15-20)
Hyphessobrycon eques (10-15)
Pterophyllum scalare (4-5)
Otocinclus vestitus (7-8)
SAE (3)
Aplocheilus lineatus (5-6) -ADD; my new favorite fish :)
Corydora's (maybe)

MUAHAHAHA first post!

Plans look great dude. What type of inline reactor are you going to use?

probably a dumb question...but do you need laterite if youre using flourite? arent they both just iron sources with the ability to trap other nutrients (which wont be an issue if youre using EI)?
HAHA Thanks philip. I'm probably going to do a DIY reactor like the one I made for my 20G. It works pretty well, only does a burp every hour or so.

You don't NEED it. Flourite can be used by itself, but Instead of inserting root tabs constantly, i'd rather just have a base layer that had all the nutrients in it. Also, some plants like crypts are heavy root feeders and they won't thrive as well without extra nutrients in the substrate. If i didn't have as much of a budget I would probably go aqua-soil. I may still do a layer of aqua-soil caped with flourite black sand and flourite dark.
thats my point tho...if youre on a budget...why buy [expensive] laterite if you dont need it and its function is covered by something else in your tank?
I have the Catalina 4 X 54 fixture........ That's their T5HO , right?

Which lamps?

Mine has the 3 switches, which i have on a multi-timer..... works great.
I only wish i had a little higher K in one or two of the lamps.

I don't see any Corys on your fish list, but maybe your substrate is too rough for their liking.

I only have about 30 Corys in my 90....... wish to add a few more .

I hope you are happy with a small tank...........i wish for about twice the volume i have now.... that would be perfect.
Yes to the t5ho. I'm going with 1 5000K 2 6700K and 1 10K. The fixture I'm looking at has 2 cords, I'm buying moonlights separate from this. They will be a full 48" 24 LED (2" space) moonlight.
I may add them into the list. I don't really want that many cory's though. Bloodfin and red minor tetras are my favorite fish. The front part will more than likely be flourite sand. I don't like the rough look of flourite to be so prominent, so maybe have a few cories.

As far as tank size, my parents told me this is the limit for my room. I'd rather not test this because they are already iffy about this much water.

Moneybags, I may be getting some leftover aqua-soil from a friend if he has any left over. I'll replace the laterite with the aqua-soil. Hope Philip has some left :)

 Cory's are the best! But 30 in a 90g?! My god... LOL.

I had a 150g for about half a year, and i couldn't keep up with it as a 16 year old... too expensive and too time-consuming. 75g is the perfect size (at least for me) right now. I think you'll be happy.

What's your reasoning behind having one 5000k bulb? Just wondering.
A friend has the same setup 1 5000K, 1 6700K, 1 10K on his 75 and has stunning red colors. It's more of an experiment than a known fact. I'm guessing it has something to do with the more reddish/yellow light?

Philip, that foster and smith free shipping is only 4 days though? Or is it always free shipping on over 49$?

Interesting. I like experiments!

Gahh.. i didn't see that the free shipping offer was for 4 days only. QUICK, go mow some lawns! ;) Shipping to Raleigh will be around $70.... HAHA, no thank you! If you can't mow enough lawns in time, then maybe try and find some local people to do a group buy with? Worth a shot. I haven't been able to find flourite black sand anywhere else for cheaper.
I'll pass it by my dad. I have my card, but they told me to ask them before I use it for big stuff.
Well, went to the Aquarium Store here in Knoxville where my grandparents live and was very suprised how well stocked their tanks were. They had a massive 110G tank packed with healthy looking stems. They also had tanks with crypts and so on.

Tank is picked out... 75G. The only thing I'm trying to figure out now is the substrate. Hoping Philip has some extra aqua-soil.
The plan looks great! Keep us updated...
Just was offered a brand new 75G for 150$ at a LFS here in TN but I don't have a way to get it back to raleigh, bummed much? Yes. But I found a very nice Crypt Wendtii for 5$, has 5+ babies and is roughly 12" tall. Hopefully it makes the trip to NC without too much melting. Things are looking progressive, hope it stays that way!
That crypt is actually cryptcoryne usternia... LFS mislabeled but i still like it. It's melting, darn crypts.

for Philip,

Found my source for the MTS in the bottom layer.
Here's the initial picture with no sifting and just dried it with a quick blow dryer...

I just have to get enough for a 3/4" layer on a 75... time to do math!

Gee, that pic looks kinda familiar. Here's your math, if you don't mind me: .75"x48"x18" (footprint), (48x18 being 864) is .75" of 864 is 648 cubic inches, which means you need a bit less than 3 gallons worth of soil?

That can't be right?

Sounds about right to me... i used over 3 bags of aquasoil (20lbs per bag) in my 90g, which is the same dimensions as a 75 (just taller).

Thanks for sharing the pic. That dirt looks a lot like aquasoil, actually! :icon_eek:

2 half full ziplock baggies full of the dirt filled my 2 gallon (10"X7") a little over 1/2", maybe even 3/4" in most spots.

That's kind of what I was thinking... Hopefully it works like it too :p I'm thinking I need about 3-4 gallons which is like 10-11L right?

Tomorrow I'll be collecting more dirt from that same area, and placing leaves and other debri back over it :) then I'll put it in a burlap bag wet it and set it in the crawlspace which stays warmer during the winter. Hopefully all goes well :)

Just out of curiosity, were they quart bags?

Aww, thanks! :icon_mrgr So, why are you putting it in the crawlspace, for storage, or for sticking minerals in it?
