I know the MS board is practically dead, but I thought I'd try anyway. Are there any good fish stores near Hattiesburg? I'll be traveling there soon and would love to check some out.

Also, if you know of any good reptile stores or plant nurseries near there, please let me know!

Thanks!

A Petco has recently opened on Hardy Street. Most fish are well cared for from my initial venture, though the goldfish are in horrid condition.

Pet Palace stock is infested with parasites from my experience.

Hey. I just moved from Hattiesburg a few months ago. The petsmart has a great fish staff for the most part. I know a lot of them personally. If you are still in the area let me know and I'll tell you which ones to talk to. The fish at the PetCo that just opened are not in good health. Stay away from them unless you get them a few days after delivery. The staff there is NOT very knowledgeable and do not really care to care, lol. Reg. Pet Palace. Ken and his wife are fairly good about stocking things that petco/smart do not carry and are more than willing to order stuff for you. +1 to watch out for ich though. I got a healthy looking fish years ago that introduced ich to my big cichlid tank. Raised temp. and salt fixed it with minimal casualties. If you develop a good rapport with them they are very useful. I raised quality fish for them. If you bought SA/CA cichlids or, angels from them they were likely some of my stock. Some of the plants were mine too.

Hey guys and gals. I'm new to the forums and from hattiesburg. I'm always up for trading plants or just accepting trimmings. Also if anyone in the area wants to know a few good places to get wild plants I know a few. Stuff like duckweed, ludwigia repens, alligator grass, hairgrass and a few more i cant remember the name of. Shoot me a message if your interested. I to have had issues with fish from pet palace. I like the place because he can order just about any fish you want but I have had a total of 3 fish out of 8 bought there that have had issues. My 2 beautiful Bosemani rainbow fish died from cotton mouth and and my pleco from there died of ich. Luckily none of the other fish in the tank were affected. I would have been pissed if my 2 year old red irian rainbow had died. I only buy from him if he orders them for me and does not release them into any tanks before I get there. I do like petsmart as they do have knowledgeable employees. 90% of them anyways. I do not buy from petco at all. There staff is not keen on proper tank maintaince. Almost all tanks have dead fish in them. They did have some silver arowanas I wanted (I never see these for sale anywhere around here) but after seeing the tank conditions I didn't want to take the chance that a $80 fish would die. Plus I don't have a tank big enough for one. They get huge! If anyone around hattiesburg has a nice driftwood root system please message me.

I meant to ask you guys if you could maybe identify a what I'm guessing is a native mississippi fish but not to sure. I have lived here 32 years and never seen this fish before today. Sorry I couldn't get a picture. I was walking the river fishing and didn't take my phone with me for fear of it getting wet. I saw a group of about 6-8 of these fish, body shape looked similar but no exactly like a synodontis catfish about 3-4 inches long with a tiger stripe or banded coloring. Darker brown with tanish color on the opposite stripes. I tried to catch one but of course they were to fast. They stayed tightly schooled and hugged the bottom like a corydoras catfish would do. If anyone could possibly identify them for me I would really appreciate it. They were absolutely beautiful fish and I would love to have some for my all native mississippi backyard pond.

Hi, goatnad. Philadelphia, MS here! For the most part I'm currently the only/most active member. I think a few lurk still but no serious activity besides me. I was a Hattiesburg res for about three years but moved to Philly last summer as my wife took a teaching job here. I collect natives(both plants and fish). Also, BST plants. Regarding the fish you are wanting ID'd try going over to the NANFA(North American Native Fishes) site and describe it there. PM whenever for anything or, you can send me your e-mail or phone. It's much easier for me to communicate that way!

Regards,

HD

Alright. Thank you for the help and friend request. If your ever down this way call me (I will pm you my number) and maybe we can meet up. I love just talking about anything fish related. It's sad there aren't more people from here on the forums. Guess most people just done get into the hobby like we do.
