Fish Sent Priority Mail

908 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  PinkRasbora
Hello friends,

Just want to ask if anyone has sent fish Priority Mail with USPS and 4 days later no fish? From Mass to Illinois. What are my guarantees that my cardinal tetras (36 of them) would still be alive?

Also, when sent priority, my understanding is that no guarantee means I am SOL? What proof does one have that they were in fact actually shipped? The seller had a good feedback on Aquabid. 93/93

Need some advice.

Thanks,

PV

once the package has been given to the post office, the seller is no longer in control. i think the only shipping rate USPS gives a time guarantee for is express/overnight shipping, priority can take a varied number of days to arrive before it's considered lost. if there was no DOA guarantee by the seller, yeah, there's nothing you can do :/
if they arrive and most/all of them are dead, you could still contact the seller on the odd chance s/he's a merciful person :p
The tracking # should be able to tell you something. Have you tried entering it on the USPS website to see if there's any info? Give USPS a call to see if they have any additional info on where the package might be. If it was indeed shipped 4 days ago, there should be something logged in their system other than the initial shipping slip entry.
If there's no tracking number, and it doesn't arrive, it wasn't shipped.
I tracked the package and all it says is " estimated delivery date July 25"

Today July 27, no other information given.

Lesson learned I guess, when you have a little extra money, don't spend it on fish; and don't buy from someone who offers no gaurantee.

Damn

or just don't order priority- if you're ordering livestock a good rule of thumb is to order express or overnight/whatever :p
People don't give guarantees on priority. Don't cheap out and use priority for fish. Always use express. You'll loose money in the end with priority. It's ok for plants.

Check your local neighborhood PO. Sometimes they try to deliver and nobody's home so the store the box in the PO. They should have left a note though.

Sadly, your fish is dead in this heat with that time period.
I only do overnight of fish and plants. Some companies only guarantee livestock this way. I agree not to go cheap on the shipping. Sure overnight is expensive but like mistergreen stated, you will loose money in the end more times than not. I also try to set my deliveries to when I know I will be at home to receive my livestock packages. Worst case scenario, I take a vacation day from work. I can't just give away my hard earned money.
I've had fish shippped priority and I haven't had any problems, they always arrive within 2 business days and have been fine. If there's a tracking number usually it'll have some history to go with it (e.g. it'll list when it was scanned and where so you can follow it). If it doesn't it's possible the seller got the number but hasn't actually shipped it yet. You can contact them to find out for sure then if it was shipped contact the shipping agency and see if they can track it down. Did you need to be there to sign for the package? If so and you weren't sometimes they'll either take it to the local shipping office for pickup by you or they send it back to the seller.
+1 for CatB's comment; if it would be "painful" (emotionally or financially) for me to lose the live fish or expensive plants then I ship Express Mail; otherwise Priority Mail. If I don't care at all then maybe 1st Class Mail but I've only done that once. It's not really the seller's fault; most sellers do not give a DOA guarantee on live fish or shrimp unless the shipment is by Express Mail or FedEx and sometimes not even then.
Overnight is the way to go with shipping live fish. I am sorry if they are DOA. ><
