[Helmetless Stig]

Seems to be some type of Gambusia. Caught in pond in New Jersey. About 1.5". Any ideas?

The mouth doesn't look like a surface feeder...could be the angle of the photo.

My first guess was that it was netted in a river and will grow into a pan-sized fish. Have no idea what it is.

I did some research and I believe you are correct but I am less than positive at this point.

Is it native to your area? It looks like a banded killifish to me. They can vary in their stripe patterns.

The wiki on the F. heteroclitus mentions that they do OK in land-locked waters.

A few landlocked populations may exist in freshwater lakes close to shore,
