First planted vase! Thoughts and ideas welcome!

So I've been wanting to do a nano set up in a vase/ big bowl for a while. I had planned on doing a rectangular vase and an igwami layout. Well.... While looking for the right container I showed my girlfriend a vase I liked, saying that I would like to do this shape sometime too. She instantly asked if it could house her Betta, Mufasa. I'd forgotten she had the poor thing! It has lived in this tiny little bowl at her parents house since she moved out of her first college dorm two years ago!

So Mufasa the Betta is coming to live with us!

The vase is 11 5/8" H & 9 3/8 wide.
Substrate will be Seachem Black Onyx Sand.
Probably won't have filtration, might run an air pump some.

I'm still kicking around ideas for plants I've got a pretty decent assortment in my two larger tanks.

I'm hoping I can convince her we need a larger tank for the betta but for now, any suggestions or ideas are a great help.

I just filled the vase for the first time to see how much water it held. Just over 3 gallons! I know it's not ideal, but that's like 2.5 gallons larger then what the betta is currently in.
So here is a picture with the substrate in the vase. I'm debating putting in another handful or two of substrate. Ideas? Thought?

I'd make the substrate thicker so you can get more square footage so to speak for planting stuff. Thank you for improving your bettas living space, I hate seeing bettas in tiny bowls.
While better than a tiny bowl it really isn't the right shape for a betta, keep an eye out for something longer so it can have some space to swim.

I've got a ten gallon(or a 20H or a 20L or a 50 cube- all sitting in my shed) I'd love to set up for the little guy if I can find the appropriate amount of space and a stand. I hope that this becomes only a temporary stage in the life of Mufasa.lol that name cracks me up anytime I write it.

So I did add a couple more handfuls of sand. I didn't want to go too deep and sacrifice less water for more substrate.

I planted a few random stems that have done well elsewhere without much help, a little bitty amazon sword, I small crypt. Lucens, along with an anubis nana. I'm sure I will probably change some things along the way, but it's a start. I think.

I also moved the vase into a different room(off the dining table) so it will get more sunlight, direct if the blinds are opened. Though I'm not too sure how happy my girlfriend will be to find the Mufasa's new home is now on her desk! Haha...

What plants work well in this style of set up?
I would also like to plant a few plants that will grow out of the water...I've always loved the planted HOB filters... Any suggestions on plants for that? Or is that a bad idea?
Any thoughts on how long I should wait prior to added the fish into this set up? About 1/3 of the water came from my 55. I am thinking I should add more plants before I add the betta. Will adding an airstone for a day help?

A little beneficial bacteria will have hitched a ride with the plants, but you'd do better to add some substrate or filter media from your 55 to help seed it.

In general, I wait a couple weeks as I prefer to have the plants settled and growing and enough beneficial bacteria going to minimize how much I'll need to fuss with the vase. The first day I'll set up the vase with substrate and fill with water to test it out. The second day I'll do a 75% wc to clear up any remaining cloudiness and add plants. Over the next couple days I'll add additional plants and do a wc if the water still hasn't fully cleared. Really small vases are tested with a pond snail or two--if they're doing well after a few days I'll move up to ghost shrimp, which is usually the final occupent. Larger vases with heavier planting are given a nerite and, once new plant growth is showing (1-2 weeks), 1-3 endlers from my main tank to test the bio load capacity. After they've proven healthy, anything that fits can go in--shrimp, fish, etc.

Or, you could get the water clear enough not to be aggravating and plop Mufasa right in--but commit to doing 1-2x daily wc to ensure his health while the bacteria catch up. Either way, make sure you don't leave the vase in direct sunlight--not only will it heat up fast, but you'll be opening yourself to algae--which is really really really really hard to scrape off curved walls!

Oh, and get mufasa a nerite snail or two for company--they'll do wonders on any algae and help clean up any dead leaves or excess food.

Thanks Knot! I was kind of guessing I should wait a couple weeks prior to adding the betta. I am planning daily water changes while the tank gets established.

I just had quite a funny "oh Sh*t!" moment. I had just gone ahead and filled the vase the rest of the way up(working on WC for the other two tanks.) I had a couple more stems I just trimmed from my 20L, I decided I would go ahead and put them in. stuck my hand in and water everywhere. HAHAHAHA... oh geez.... I feel so "special"...... good times, good times!

I do that at least once a week. It just doesn't click over in my head in time that my hand is going to take up significant volume.

Don't know if you have any floaters in your tank to add here, but frog bit or dwarf water lettuce can look great in these vases, with the additional benefit of giving Mufasa a bit of sheltering cover and acting as a natural pond snail trap, So much easier to pick snails off frogbit leaves than snag 'em from the curved sides!
I don't have floaters, yet. I plan on getting some.

I have been looking through a lot of bowl threads and have seen some amazing stuff! Lots of inspiration!

On an awesome note, this WILL only be a temporary living space for Mufasa the betta! Yay!! I'm going to build a DIY stand for my 10g tank! I'm planning on using a planted HOB filter. So excited about that! The unfortunate part of this is that it might be 6 mo before I can do that. Hopefully not! My parents are coming to visit us from AZ in a couple weeks, my dad is pretty good at projects like that! I'm hoping I can talking him into helping me do it while he is here!

I have no plans to tear this bowl down after that though!

Water definitely was cleared up a bit today. I will be doing a water change later this evening. Since I'm going to the lake tomorrow I'm gonna see if I can find a few local emergent plant species to add to my bowl.

So I went to the lake today to hang out, gathered quit a few plants! A ton of hair grass!! Several other types I'm not to sure about, I will post plant specific questions as I sort through them!

I used my cup as storage! I'd had enough screwdrivers by then anyways!
