This is my first planted tank. Ive dabbled with a 39g plastic decor tank for several years but it was boring and I did basic maintenance only. I bought a whole setup used. A lot of no name equipment. Then bought some of my own equipment.

75g tank
Fluval 407
5lb CO2 tank with Fzone Mini V3.0 Regulator
2" jlardi Diffuser
Bubbler
Power Head
Seriyu Stone
Drift wood
Mopani wood
No Name Full spectrum light.

So I took a long time deciding on a look to shoot for. I figured it out but then decided to keep it simple for my first one. I Used some rigid pink insulation board to build grade. I glued a few pieces together and then coated it with Dry-Loc Waterproofer. I then siliconed it to the bottom of the tank and put some weight on it while it dried. I spent a few hours placing Seiryu stone and wood. Slept on it and came back the next day and moved it around again. When I was content, I filled it with water. I was apprehensive about this because I thought it would be easier to plant with out any water or minimal water. Anyway, I let the pump and heater run for a few days while I waited on my plants.

I had no idea what plants to get, just knew that I wanted reds, purples, and a variety of shades of green. So I contacted a guy that I was referred to and he hooked me up.

He sent me:
Cardamine, Narrow leaf java fern, Ludwigia glandulosa x repens, Grotiola v., Anubias coffeefolia, Pogostemon helferi, AR pink, Crypt ponderifolia, Lobelia cardinalis, Myriophyllum roraima, Rotala blood red, Ludwigia arcuata, Ludwigia atlantis, Red Melon Sword, Subwassertang, Ludwigia Super Red Mini, Bolbitis heudelotii, Echinodorus Aflame, Anubia Nana Golden, Ludwigia Ovalis Pink

If Im being Honest, I didn't really care what I planted because I didn't really know the difference. So they came in the mail and I did my best to arrange them based on the little amout that I knew. I accidently planted the java fern in the substrate and had to fix that.

I did a 20% water change 2 days later, and then after observing decent numbers and getting some questionable advice, I added some fish. My brother was looking to rehome his, so I took his 6 tetras and his rubber lip plecko.(havent seen him since).

7 days later I noticed my Ph on the rise at 7.2 and my ammonia on the rise at 2.0. KH 80, GH 180, Phosphate at 2. Some hair algae growing, Some Staghorn Algae growing, and melting/dying leaves and stems. I did a water change, removed as much hair algea as I could, trimmed some dead stuff. I did observe some new growth! :)

I have been using root tabs, flourish and flourish trace. I am trying to let the plants establish themselves but I am concerned that My light intensity is too much. I'm concerned about my CO2. My Drop Checker is dark green but i'm counting 2-3 bubbles/sec. Already seems like a lot. I am trying to figure out how to balance but its so new and I dont have a clue really. I did turn up the CO2 a little bit, hoping it will drop the PH a little and help out with the plants. Please help if you have something worth sharing.

I hope I can keep this updated!

I'm so happy to say that my tank is cycled!!! I'm seeing new growth everywhere and I was finally able to introduce my livestock.

6 glow tetras (there for the cycle already), 8 cardinal tetras, 11 ember tetras, bristle nose pleco, rubber lip pleco, rainbow shark, 15 amano shrimp and a couple German blue rams hopefully soon.

I think I'm going to get a few floating plants for the fish.. what kind though?

I installed a spray bar, and ordered a skimmer and a reactor. I'm looking forward to organizing all the electric and plumbing. It's a bit of a mess right now.

Looking good!

I like dwarf water lettuce a lot, fwiw. I had frogbit for a long time, but definitely prefer the water lettuce. It keeps a short and sturdy root in a high tech tank with decent flow, unlike the frogbit which drops its roots in similar conditions. It also has a nice, bright color and fuzzy texture.

Well it has been too long since I have posted any update. So much has happened that I can not remember everything. I've loved, I've lost, I've moved forward.

I have learned how critical small details are with injecting CO2. Because of this, I lost a GBR and my amano shrimp. All of them. This one surprised me actually. I upgraded my filter and while I did this, I had to move my CO2 tank. What I didn't do was test and make sure nothing got bumped. Well the needle valve got moved and I suffocated my tank.

I fought BBA for a while. I think I am on top of it, but I learned what Hydrogen peroxide does to anubias for extended periods of exposure. I learned that SAE aren't all that they are cracked up to be. I also learned that I don't want to deal with it again if at all possible.

Ok, so the positives now...

I am in the process of building a spray bar. In testing right now.
I upgraded to an FX4
Learned how to mix and started dosing EI
Upgraded to a fluval 3.0.
Built a Reactor (Thank you for your help @EmotionalFescue)
Upgraded bubble counter to a flow meter
Installed an inline heater
Brought home an Electric Blue Acara who I have really bonded with
Have been doing minor rescaping and watching my plants grow like crazy!
I am learning a lot about propagation.
I am also relearning my love for learning. Its been a while since I've been challenged and I am enjoying it.

I am due to trim my tank a bit but Im enjoying it like this for a while.

Look above for a picture from Late November, and then see the updated pictures from Late April. 5 months later. Time does fly.

Tank really took off in April! Looks great!

I feel like I'm following a similar path to you. Curious how you like the FX4 vs 407 and the Plant 3.0 vs your previous light?

What kind of reactor did you build? What are your thoughts on it and would you do anything different if you could go back?

Sounds like @EmotionalFescue has had his hands full mentoring us newer members! 😂

Dang. Sorry about your fish. CO2 can be tricksy like that.
I didnt really realize the potential issues when I started it. But I have learned a lot and it got my brain working differently when considering other things. Such as using lids. Floating plants, etc.

bummer about the CO2 related deaths.

Very nice progression on the tank by the way... Needs a bit of a trim though? haha
That sword really dominates the center, have you considered moving it to the back corner at all?
It was unfortunate, but it happens. It really turned my wife off from CO2. It's getting trimmed tonight hopefully. Which corner are you referring to? I was trying to keep it all stems on the right, and I have a cave that takes up some realty, so the right would be difficult. I already have a red melon sword in the back left as well. It's kind of stuck. Lol.

I'm not looking back at all with the upgrades. They were both essential in my opinion. I forget the name of the reactor type... Maybe @EmotionalFescue can chime in? See picture though. Don't mind the mess. Upgrading the filter forced me to relocate the tank and I haven't built a table to hide all of it yet.

The only thing I would do differently is try to find a way to use larger hose. This would include finding a filter cartridge with bigger openings as well. Not sure if that exists though. I may have tried using the filter as a reactor before putting the money into this reactor I suppose. I've seen a few threads that mention it.

Sorry for your fish and shrimp loss!! But your tank looks GLORIOUS 🤩
Thank you!

Well this was my first major trim. I was nervous. My ex wife used to get upset when I was cleaning up the yard because I got a little trim happy. I get it from my dad I think.

I started at the top and I was inevitably left with 4 stems that looked awful so I ended up pulling those out and replanting the cuttings. I took some advice and separated them at different lengths and planted them in order back to front long to short.

I also replanted a few more clumps of the rotela and bacopa. And then moved some of the lettuce to my son's 55gal.

Over all, I'm not too upset with how it turned out. I'm anxious to see if start to grow again though.

Looks good post trim. I used to put my bleherae swords closer to the corners just so it wouldnt shade everything in the center of the tank. Personal preference really since I found them to get big. I am very jealous of the Electric Blue Acara.
Thank you! I am learning that about the swords. If I ever do a major rescape, I will keep your suggestion in mind.

The EBA was a surprise. I went to a guys house for some equipment as he was liquidating to move. I wasn't expecting to come home with a fish, but he caught my eye. I've really connected with him too.

I have some tiny ember tetras that almost got eaten by him when I dropped food in, so now I feed him first at the surface.

Did they have trouble in the corner pressing against the glass? Because they grow out kinda sideways...

Last night I found myself with some time and I couldn't peel myself away from my tank. One thing I have realized in this hobby is that as plants grow, the tank changes. So everyday or every week I can look at something different. I totally fell in love with my tank again last night.

Watching how the community of fauna interact with each other is so mesmerizing to watch as well. I wonder how long I was locked on haha.

I am considering adding a few more fish. Not sure if I want to build onto the schools that I already have or go with something new though.

I haven't shared anything in a while so I thought I'd make a quick post.

I'm surprised at what I have enjoyed the most out of this tank. I have loved watching how it changes as plants grow and change the lighting/shadows inside the tank. It's been interesting to watch how much better the anubias do in the shade, and to see how some of the fauna will hangout in the shadows.

Right now my Rotala is growing out of the water. While I know the submerged portion will start to fail, I've been enjoying watching this. It will get trimmed soon.

As the Rotala has minimized water flow on the surface, my dwarf water lettuce has made a comeback. I didn't even know I had any remaining in the tank! LOL.

The crypts are doing well, and the cucumber melon sword is too much for this tank. Each leaf is every bit of 12-18" long and 6" wide. Any more than 4 leaves at a time, the whole tank gets crowded and too dark. My anubias have made a comeback since accidentally burning them with hydrogen peroxide as well.
