First Nano Tank! Need Help
So I think I'm going to be ordering my first nano tank soon. I saw one online I lik a lot its 2.3 gallon, 18 inches long. I would like to get some input/feedback on what you all think of how I should set it all up. I have a few ideas, just looking to finalize.
I think I will use an aquaclear 20 for filtration unless you can think of a better or cheaper one that will work. I think I'll need a small heater just because the winters are cold here so the temp in the hpuse fluctuates a bit. I'm pretty lost on what lighting to use. I saw one on eBay that another member used for this sizetank but not sure if it will have enough light for what I want. LED or fluorescent? Maybe ecopico strips I'm thinking of using aqua soil or flourite as substrate, Mmaybe injecting DIY CO2.
As far as plants go, I'm thinking E Belem carpet, blyxa japonica or crypt willisii, anubias petite,a smaller crypt possibly wendtii, some moss and finally a short stem(any suggestions?) Possibly red watermilfoil or ambulia.
As far as fish/inverts I was thinking just a few ottos some shrimp and a scarlet badis. Any other suggestions? Maybe pygmy cories.

I believe they are 18x7x5. It is used for multiplr brtta tanks or corals so there are 5 seperate compartments that can be temoved
I believe I know the tank you're talking about and I love it lol.
If it were me, I wouldn't bother with fish, I'd just go inverts.
But if you wanted fish too, try least kilifish.

I'm not too worried on the fish at this point, I just need to know where to start with the lighting! Lol I've heard a lot of different ideas.
You can go as high tech or low tech as you want on a tank like that. Some people on here even use swanky-looking desk lamps for their nanos. What sort of price range are you looking to spend on your lighting? That would probably help us make good recommendations.
Cheapest is best. But I would want to have medium high to high lighting. I found a small one on ebay for about 30 bucks but I've seen marineland fixture for over 50$

Well.. I know there are some good LONG lights for a tank of that type on sites like big als, dr fosters and smith, wag.com and places like that. You have to search a little, but LEDs are your best bet for a little tank like thatI really just want ample enough light tp let thrse plants thrive not just survive.

Ok thanks ill keep looking! Any comments on filter type? And also how do you dry start? Just add substrate and planta then add light? How long? And how much water do you add?
So I was looking at some finnex light and they have a clip on fixture for 31$ it produces 26 watts of high par. One problem is its only 10 inches so it wont be long enough for my 18" tank.
If you're going to go high light you have to have CO2. I use the Nova Extreme T5 2x18 fixture on my nano tank. It is 18" long. I have an HC carpet, hair grass is starting to carpet, and blyxa grows faster than I know what to do with it. I also have pressurized CO2 and dose ferts.
The growth on this tank is pretty good. The downfall is its a lot of work, which I somewhat enjoy, a lot of people would not. Don't make the mistake in thinking that setting up a nano tank is any easier or less work. Lots of trimming. Lots. Add in high light and it will necessitate CO2 and ferts.
The Aquaclear 20 should work just fine, maybe even the 30 if you could. I like to over filter as many others do.

I'm not against over filtering. But this is a 2 gal tank. A self made sump would be amazing. Two azoo palm filters would do great, other than that I'm not sure.
And yes try to keep yourself at low light. You might try to find two lights that hang high enough over that your tank that keep you at medium light.

I just realized that didn't show up haha. Well its an 18 inch LED light fixture with 54 LED 300 lumens 51 are 6500 k and 3 are actinic 460 volts. nm. It uses 5 watts 110-220

How do you come out to that conclusion? I have an Edge 6g and 1 of my MR16 bulbs pushes out more lumens than that whole light fixture and with it I wouldn't even consider it low par. My entire DIY LED setup on it pushes over 2000 lumens and it's not close to 100 par when turned on full blast.I actually want to say yes. Right on the line between medium and low.
