Filter advice for someone with back problems

620 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  markf
Im currently in the process of setting up a 40 breeder and need to pick a filter. I would like a canister but with back problems I don't know if I can handle the lifting. Can anyone recommend a filter I could use that is on the lighter side and strong enough for inline heater and co2 reactor? Would like to be under $100. I know its a lot of restrictions but that is my dilemma. Thanks :laugh2:

We have a penn plax cascade 1200 on our 40 breeder. I don't think it's too heavy, but we only move it once a month or so. I don't know answers to the rest of your questions, but it is way more filter than needed for the tank size and flow is very good.

The filters themselves aren't the problem, it's the water in them. Unless it the bending that bothers your back, then I would say just go with a hang on. Also, most hold at most 2 gallons, so the weight of the whole unit is under 20 pounds. I'm not sure what your abilities are though.

Alternatively, ensure you get one with baskets, then remove each one individually for maintenance, and get a small water pump to take a little water out of the canister at a time.

Sorry if I'm getting too into working with your abilities, rather than saying you should get filter X. It's a big part of what I do for a living. :nerd:
I was also actually thinking of making a slide out shelf to make it easier to reach, as I cant really bend and reach into a cabinet. Taking the baskets out with the filter in the stand might work also. thanks
Consider getting a canister with baskets for media, and placeing it on the side or behind the tank. That way you get easy access, and can even do most of the work on it sitting down. You can remove the top, then pull out the baskets for cleaning.

For some reason most people seem to feel that everything needs to fit in the stand, but this can be a difficult place to work on the equipment.

That's a clever idea! Or, if reaching is the bigger issue than bending, set it up on the side of the tank, outside of the stand on the floor, if you have the room.
The Cobalt EXT filter is rated up to 55 gallon tanks, and is pretty easy to clean. Nice handles, and the top come up for easy cleaning. Because the pump is separate from the canister body, the body is a little smaller and easier to handle. I have five of them and love them.
I have HOB filters myself.
But I hope you have something for easy water changes. Been unable to do water changes for 6+ months. My helper is less than thrilled about water change time so I change less and not as often.
Good luck to you.
Short update, went with a sun sun and built a slide out shelf that I think will work. I will remove the top and one tray at a time. Best I could manage.
