Also look into lilly pipes or other overflow means. I understand you have a small tank so it may not be practical though. On my 90 gallon tank, I have an overflow in the corner that handles surface skimming.

While the film is unsightly it's not so harmful.

I bought one for my 55 gallon tank but decided to swich back to the original one after a few days. The cap on top kept going up and down and air bubbles would continue to go into the tube, hence my canister filter was constantly struggling and I couldn’t get it to stay still. Maybe it was also because of all the mini water lettuce that was gathering around it.
have you ever experienced that?

I don't actually have a Lilly pipe/surface skimmer since my overflow corner built into the tank accomplishes the goal. I do have to make sure to keep my water level fairly constant (I add about a half gallon of RO water daily)
