Figure 8's need a brackish environment to live their full life span. I would highly suggest dwarf puffers, and not figure 8's. Adding salt to a planted tank is never a good idea. Most plant species can not tolerate even a small amount.

I was thinking of getting some puffers for my 30 gallon. Will they eat the pond snails and planaria that are in there?
Also I read something about adding marine salt is that necessary?
