Favorite Medium Tank for Aquascaping?

1062 Views 14 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  MCHRKiller
I would love to hear about the experiences of people who have aquascaped medium sized (30-70 gallons) planted tanks.

I am interested in aquascaping a long-term Southeast Asian Biotope, but have been away from the hobby for many years. I am looking at maybe a 40 breeder, on account of the 18" depth of field it provides, but I like the length and height of the 55 gallon a lot as well.

I would love to get a better feel for the dimensions of tanks that have worked well for others. If you can share your experience, please provide the dimensions of your tank, as I am a very numbers-oriented person.

Thanks in advance!

The best of both worlds would be a 75 gallon which is 48x18x21
My favorite shape tanks in that general size range is either a 40B or a 75G. You can do really almost any fish in a 75G from an up to 14" bruiser cichlid or a ton of small nano fish.

I am a little hesitant to start off with a 75 gallon, largely because it just requires larger (read: 'more expensive') hardware overall: lighting, filtration, stand/canopy... But what I've seen many more experienced people say is that larger tanks require less maintenance overall, on account of the stability that comes with that much biomass. Does that jive with your experiences, @MCHRKiller, @Nlewis?
@Nlewis, I love your 40B Journal! I hope something works out so that your new fry can be well taken care of.
I have a 55g, I wish I went for a 75 instead, the 18" depth is nice.

Thanks for the compliment and most likely the fry wont survive, but ill most likely breed them when i get back home.

Bigger tanks are general easier to maintain water chemistry and also work in. I have a 55, 40b, 2-20's and a 10g. My 40b is by far my favorite foot print and easiest tank to work in. Some things for this tank are more expensive, lighting for example can be costly do to the fact its 3' long which is less common than 4' tanks. I'd give up my 55 for a 75 in a second given the chance.
Never had a 40b, but since getting my 65, and later 75, I won't have an aquarium of any size that isn't at least 18 back to front. As everyone else has said, there really are few limitations. The 65 was a little hard to deal with the 24" height, but the 75 is a dream.
I'm new to planted tanks and have been looking at them and comparing. I saw the 75 today and loved it. Everyone's comments here is pushing me toward that one. PetSmart has it on sale with a stand and LED light for 325.00 until 4/2/17. Should I do it?

Petco should be starting the dollar per gallon sale in the next few days, I would go for that instead. The LED will be worthless for plants anyway.

Thanks, all. It really sounds like the 75 is the way to go. I really like it's depth and height: much more room to muck about in.

The silicone on those Marineland 75s is scary...never seen one at my local store worth packing home. Also the light is utter crap. You would be better off getting one of their "Topfin" 75s(its actually an Aqueon) and buying a stand and good light. You can find similar particle board stands on Petsmart.com for ~$125....get a Beamswork LED and the TopFin combos are often on sale for around $175. You might end up paying a tad more but you get a better constructed tank(from what I have seen at my store anyway) and a better light for roughly the same cost.

I have a Marineland 75 and the silicone look solid to me. What makes you think they are scary?
The ones at my Petsmart always have a lot of bubbles in the silicone and the silicone itself is very minimal...the Aqueon/Topfins silicone just always looks more solid so Ive always just purchased that version(even though I would rather have a black seal tank).

Ok thanks. I picked mine up at That Fish Place, and checked it thoroughly. No issues. Maybe Petsmart is getting a lesser quality.
Could be....Ive seen other folks online complain of this with the Marineland 75s from Petsmart as well. Just something to be cautious of should the OP decide to go that route.
