excuse me but who are you and how did you get in my tank? (Part II)

Hello all -

Over the last few days I've noticed yet another thing in my tank that I didn't put there! My substrate is 100% Fluorite, so when I started noticing small round things sitting on the substrate I knew something was up.

I can take a picture later, but the description is simple enough:

1) They are essentially white spheres sitting right on the substrate. There might be more buried, but I'm only seeing them on the surface. They are concentrated in one area of the tank.

2) They are about the size of a BB, perhaps a bit bigger.

3) I reached in with my calipers/grabbers and grabbed one to bring it to the surface. It popped and exposed into a cloud of whitish dust.

Anyone have any idea what this might be?? Any ideas much appreciated :)

thanks, Dave

I have found those in my tanks that I bought used with Eco Complete. I figured it was some fertilizer additive the previous owner had used. Are you thinking they are a living thing?
I thought so, but I was just thinking they are sort of like perlite (sp?) that you use in potting plants. I took another out and crushed it up close - just a sort of dusty goo inside. Doesn't seem like perlite but maybe something similar.

It's slightly irregular, not perfect spheres so I wouldn't be surprised if it were some kid of egg, but there's no obvious organic or live content.

Also, it occurred to me that these little white things are concentrated around some Vesuvius plants that I bought here on S&S. I rinsed them pretty well, but maybe some of the substrate from the seller?

That would be Osmocote. Shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT: What fertilizers do you use? They could be Rootmedic stuff as well.
I use rootmedit root tabs (just started them).
Also some Flourish that i'm using while I'm waiting for my 'real' ferts to come in the mail.

I haven't added osmocote, and this tank was started from scratch using 100% Flourite. I really did rinse the plants well so I'd be surprised if so many little white balls escaped my attention - there are at least 10 visible not included the 3 that I removed to check them out!

Well, did you put any root medic near the vesuvius??
Excuse my fingers, they have super glue all over them. This is Root Medic Complete+, courtesy of over_stocked.

I did, yes!
But the little white spheres in the rootmedic capsules are so small compared to the ones that I have. Do they swell up??? :) That would explain it. I went nutz with the tabs. The vesuvius is growing like mad!
I'm not sure, I don't have white spheres in mine, just yellowish ones. But I think it's just some ferts that got exposed cuz the tabs tend to want to float. I have MTS in my tank so I think they exposed the ferts a little, cuz my water pH dropped from 7.8 to the 6's.
I had the same thing in my tank. It's the root medic capsule stuff. Justin assured me though that it is safe!
The pieces are much bigger than would fit in the capsules - do they expand after soaking for a while?
I'm guessing they do. When I squeezed one (I like how that was both our first instinct!), just water came out. I later pm'ed justin (Over_stocked) about it since I right away recognized the beads and he assured me it was all safe. They don't dissolve into the water. The nutrients leave those beads but the beads are left behind. I just remove them as I see them.:icon_mrgr
It is rootmedic. Seems you are planting and replanting lots, huh?
You can either push them down or pull them out. If recently added, push back down what you can.
