I'm thinking about doing a second tank with a very sinister, almost death metal / satanic theme for my friends. Was thinking of a black forest or something with black sand, tons of black or weird colors and tons of witchy looking driftwood with moss. What would be the most evil looking stock of creatures I could get that would be peaceful with each other? I'm thinking about a heavily planted 10 gallon tank.

I've always thought that the red or black tetra look kind of evil.
Red serpae tetra, red/black phantom tetra, black neon tetra maybe, or something like that. I'm not too sure about a 10 gallon, however..

There's also pencilfish, albinos, and glo-fish.

Space is a serious issue here in San Francisco where rent costs median $3500, so it has to be a smallish tank unfortunately. Maybe snails and orange eyed shrimp? I feel like the verticality of the design will be an issue for fish...

Bump: My idea is the tank looks normal by day, but at night it becomes something that makes people feel very uncomfortable to look at, although all the inhabitants are peaceful. I kind of want to avoid crabs or frogs... The execution needs to super classy, including the black velvet cover that will be taken off to show guests. >

I'd say if you had more space, get Vampire Tetras. They literally swim with their heads almost vertically down and they use their pelvic fins to maneuver themselves. They also have pretty big teeth for a tetra.

It's like a barrucuda? I want something slow and witchy. I'm thinking orange eyed shrimp and black devil snails. I want the substrate and the look to be so dark that you don't even really see the inhabitants. Maybe a really cool glass cat fish or black cat fish...

Just make sure they don't eat plants. I've never kept em before but they are a badass evil looking fish.

BGK are awesome fish (currently have one in my 150g) and would fit your creepy theme. But they also grow well over a foot long so definitely not an option for a 10g.

Don't get much scarier looking than vampire tetras, but again you'd need an aquarium that's several hundred gallons.

Not too many options given your size constraints unfortunately.

Glass catfish would work. If you want to do shrimp, the macrobrachium varieties look scarier than the ones most people keep in planted tanks. Many species get huge (scarily huge), but red claw marco shrimp would probably work in a 10g.

Bamboo shrimp are also a little freaky looking.

Black Ghost Knife fish

While that was the first fish that came to mind for me too no way in a 10 gal. They can grow up to 2' although 1' is more the norm, still though I wouldn't house them in anything under 100 gal and still feel that's cramped fro them.

That being said hand down my fav fish of all time!

Jet Black Angels, Black Mollies , a lone Rainbow Shark and a male bristlenose catfish with fully developed bristles could be a good combination too. And also the Black Phanthom tetras.
