Do you need to do evaporation top-offs with pure non-tap water so minerals and salts don't accumulate? For some reason I had the idea in my head that you did but I think I may have just been recalling information from reef aquarium books I read...

if you're doing regular water changes, it isn't an issue. topping up water without ever doing water changes will cause a gradual increase in hardness, but it isn't an issue like it is in SW.

i do top ups with regular water and a weekly water change. i don't even add anything to the water i use for top ups either.

Plants will consume the elements in the water too. I have 2 low tech tanks where I only top off (tap water), maybe water changes every 3 months. The water in those tanks are softer, more acidic than the tap water.

You guys are thinking of non-planted tanks.
