Epic Balloon Boy Saga

Did anyone else catch this today?
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/16/colorado.balloon.boy/

Basically, some kid said he saw his little brother climb into a weather balloon and release the rope teather. Balloon proceeds to float across colorado before crashing down, only to be found empty. Turns out the kid who was supposed to be in there was really hiding in the attic the whole time. In a later interveiw the kid says somthing to the effect of "You guys (parents) said we did it for the show."

Right now the speculation is that the parents totally hoaxed it. But it sure made for some damn good television (and twitter trending topics.)

Bonus hilarity: The family was previously featured on "Wife Swap", and is completely crazy.

I was watching this live and when I saw that there was no kid in the balloon I texted the word "hoax" to my wife immediately. Just didn't feel right about it. It did make for some interesting tv for a slow thurs. afternoon.
This morning they interviewed the family on CNN, and I actually hadn't heard this story at ALL yesterday because I was in isolating myself from TV and radio... and so I heard it all, and then heard what they had to say this morning, and I am hard-pressed to believe it WASN'T a hoax. There is something very odd about that family. That kid is HIGHLY unbehaved (while his older two brothers seem very well-behaved, for whatever reason). The mother seems to be almost robotic, like maybe she's under mind control or something. And the father just acted like one of those parents that believes it is more important to be friends with his children than to be a parent to them.

It was all HIGHLY odd to wake up to...
Some people in my state do some strange things.
I quickly estimated the size and volume of the balloon in my head and come to the conclusion it would only lift about 40 lbs that includes the weight of balloon also. So I went on to other things. :) What can I say I question everthing on tv
This is one of my favorite news stories of late. Through the families own foibles, it keeps getting funnier and funnier.

That larry king live interview was amaaazing, when the kid said "you guys said we did it for the show" you could just see that the dad was like 'ohdamnohdamnohdamnohdamn' for getting his hoax blown on national TV by his kid.

And then when Wolf Blitzer tried to press the issue with the kid, the dad went and got so offended it's like, yeah dude, you're totally not trying to hide somthing.
I think it's hard to tell whether it was a hoax or not, unless someone came forth and admitted it. But regardless of it being a hoax or not, those are some bad parents.

Was quite entertaining, though.
I saw some clips of it on (guess where) Youtube. It I was that kids parent (assuming it was'nt a hoax) I would give that kid the whippin of his life! Man I would be mad!

That was a classic moment. Oh kids, they say the darndest things. Then there was the fart + double vomit on live television. I know, I know, juvenile to laugh at that kind of thing (and poor kid clearly felt nasty when he harfed his breakfast up) but the dead silence punctuated by a fart after the kid made his damning statement was perfect.
^ What? I missed that part!! Was that during the Wolf interview?

I totally missed the kid ralphing on live tv but really, this story can't get any more absurd.

That fart during dead silence cracked me up SO BAD, but then again, I'm evidently 12.
Guys, I don't see any evidence anywhere that the kid farted. Google turns up nothing but results for youtube, rottentomatoes, and a whole bunch of other joke sites. Nothing official.

I watched the interview on the actual CNN website, and I heard no farts. Something tells me you guys were watching doctored youtube clips.

Now as far as the puking, I'm still looking.

[edit: okay, the puking was real]

Must be a 12 year old thing. 15 year olds don't find it that funny. :flick:
Yeah that fart isn't real. Someone just added it in there before uploading it to youtube.

I'm glad that we have an in house humor expert to verify that. :icon_roll

Pretty sure the fart was real, as people heard it on live TV. I don't think CNN needs to sink to fart jokes for the ratings by that point.

Nope, the fart has been verified (probably the only verified part of this whole story :hihi:). We do not know, however, who perpetrated the act.
It's pretty much blown as a hoax by this point, news reports are that Charges are going to be filed, and gawker had a big piece on a guy who said he helped Richard Heene plan the whole thing as a stunt to promote a reality TV show.

This story keeps getting more and more glorious by the hour, the macros are pretty golden too.

Parents are poor actors at best. Bet they are even worse "scientists"! :icon_wink

Have a look at the Blitzer clip when the ask about whether or not the kid heard them calling him while he was "hiding" in the attic. Their reaction is like this is some sort of revelation. "You heard us?....Why didn't you come down?", as if this, a few days after the whole thing, is the first time they have heard this bit of information. You would think that that would be one of the first questions the parents, and the police, would ask.

Nah.

These people need to be charged with more than a misdemeanor if possible.

They must be held accountable for their selfish actions and be forced to re-imburse the involved counties and the National Guard for their "rescue efforts" (especially considering the difficult economic climate and the stress they put on local government budgets with their lark).

Colorado's board of children's services also need to be called in to have a look at this situation. Seems the parents have little trouble thrusting these kids into high profile situations. The welfare of these kids as well as their parents motives need to be examined and highly scrutinized.

Endangerment, explotative and shameful.

On the subject of bad parenting, another fact about this story that stuck out to me was that the father said something like "Well I had to tell him 3 times to get out of the balloon..." or something to that effect.

WHAT?!

What kind of parent are you for not making this dangerous "toy" of yours inaccessible to them in the first place, much less allowing him the opportunity to get in it 3 times?!!! After that first time, the kid should have been scolded severely, and then a chainlink fence should have been erected around its perimeter.

Obviously, this family has problems. I firmly believe this is one of those cases where the parents are too interested in trying to be their kids' friends instead of their parents.

Not too many news stories make me mad, but this one does.
