Emersed S Repens???

792 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Vohlk
So today I took one of my s repens plants out of the tank to do an experiment!

I got a 1 pint mason jar, filled with some tiny pea gravel and dirt (1/2 1/2) then stuck the s repens in there and put a sandwhich bag over it to keep the humidity in there. Will this even work? lol im just doing this for an experiment but if this works ill be amazed! The transition from submerged to emersed how long will that take as well?

This definitely works, people do this all the time (many use different setups I used ice cube trays (for holding large amounts of ice cubes) with holes drilled in them in a 29g) The transition is different based on your variables (temp, humidity, light amount) but it should take less than a month before you start seeing some serious growth.
I went from 3 plantlets to .5kg worth of S. Repens in 5 months. Just remember that there will be a transfer time back and most likely significant melting when you try to go back to submersed.

Just make sure to balance out the amount of water you have in the jar. Too much and you get algae covering the soil and mold issues. If you dont know how much to add, add slightly less than you think. Damp soil not wet.
It's tricky at first but once you figure it out it gets pretty easy.

Good luck post back with updates?

I know this post was a while back, have achieved what I wanted. you said you wanted to see some updates so check out my Emersed S Repens Journal
Thanks for the notification. Looks good, looks like you got a lot more growth out of the other plants that you had than the s. repens though, maybe I am seeing incorrectly. But if you got what you want thats all that counts. I only ran mine for experiments on melting and how repens handles constant changes in immersed vs emmersed environments. I didn't actually end up keeping hardly any of them. Glad you got it to work, and you have a very nice greenhouse I must say.
